I am not a mycologist so my thoughts on this book are less technical than those of a professional. This is not a comprehensive guide but the authors provide a good basic introduction to mushrooms and hoe to tell them apart based on distinguishing characteristics, where they live and the relationships between mushrooms and their habitats, when they are likely to appear. The way they group mushrooms makes them easy to match the ones you find in the field with the ones in the book. They provide color drawings of each mushroom instead of photographs but the drawings are good. For each mushroom the authors provide information on whether or not you can eat it, where it grows, when it grows, identifying characteristics, and a black and white photo of a spore print. Einstein once said something like "makes things as simple as possible but no simpler." These authors manage that.
Not only is this a great reference for mushroom hunters in the North woods, I have had the opportunity to become acquainted with Cora Mollen and in person she is just as knowledgeable as her book. This book is a gem and if you love to be in the woods, a must have for your library!
Perfect little book for those of us in the north central/Midwest regions. Packed with accurate illustrations and interesting facts about commonly encountered species. Every Great Lakes Naturalist's library should include this excellent guide.
I would have liked pictures rather than the drawings. There were numerous Fungi I could not identify with this book.
Interesting and easy to use. Thoughtfully researched and easy to follow for a beginner. Good photos and illustrations. Nice to have to look up mushrooms.
I purchased this book for my son in law because he is on a continuous spring hunt for morels. He loves this book.
Very, Very Similar to F.F. of New England...Bought Both & would have been fulfilled with one or the other...
BOOK is great though a little big to be taken out for field ID. pictures are not real but very nice
