I'm enjoying this book very much. I always like the DVD lessons that Mr. LaFosse includes with many of his books, they are such a help. The flowers are new (to me at least) except for the ubiquitous lily -- why even include that one? -- It's everywhere, although it is always lovely. My only gripe, really, is with the paper that's included. It's ordinary and actually not-all-that-good kami. I'm pretty sure that's not the paper Mr. L. used in demonstrating the models on the DVD. I don't expect him to send along the great papers he and Mr. Alexander produce at their studio, but jeepers, if you're going to hype the fact that paper is included, give us a break and make an attempt to include something a little bit special. And a bit crisper. The best models I've made from this book use paper other than what was included with the book.All in all this is a fun book, lots of neat flowers. Good presentation and helpful hints on the DVD (be sure to look at that as there is lots of help not included in the book). I almost want to give 4 1/2 stars, but I was put off by the mediocre paper when I expected better from Michael LaFosse. He is a good teacher. And the book is a good deal. And I'm happy to have it.
This kit has paper, a dvd and a book full of traditional style flowers. The paper is a standard kami paper, brightly colored on one side, smooth, thin, and easy to fold. The book diagrams are in standard origami notation, but have instructions in English under each step to clarify the steps. The dvd is very well done, with the focus on the folding and brightly lit.The models are a mix of fairly simple one page models like the lily, more complex models like a rose, and modular models. There are also a few leaf models and instructions for adding calyxes and stems to the flowers for displays or gifts.I'm rose impaired, and A Rose for Irene is a lovely, complex model with a lot of layers. Trying it just from the book, I messed up a couple steps. So I tried the dvd. Just delightful. Each step was explained, and using it in conjunction with the book, it all made sense. It was like having a private class in how to fold that rose. I tried a few other models using the book and dvd together and it helped out considerably for fitting in the last piece of a modular flower. The lily model, as shown on the DVD actually showed me a faster way to fold it than I've been doing for the last several years.If you're more than a casual folder- this kit may be too basic for you but I'd strongly recommend it to beginning folders. The video instructions are well explained, and in conjunction with the book will teach you how to do origami. The models are well chosen too. The flowers can be use as ornaments or gifts.Complimentary copy received for review on my craft blog. This is my honest opinion.
Great opportunity to make your own flowers, instead of silk flowers. Would also make a nice gift or get-well bouquet. Good instructions, really nice paper, very clean design and presentation in a storage box.
I would recommend this kit to any origami enthusiasts but especially those who love flowers and modular origami (about a half of the included models are modular). This kit makes a nice gift and a good travel companion as well!
Somewhat disappointing. The book shows some lovely flowers. I found the written/pictorial instructions very hard to follow (I am a novice at origami so that's probably partly on me). I did use the book to find video instructions on line. The papers do not seem to be good quality at all, much inferior to other papers I have bought online. Most of the papers are 2" square, very small to do the kind of folding required for the flowers, especially with paper that does not fold well. The DVD did not work on my computer...will try on the TV. For the price, I found it lacking. I saw a lot of positive reviews before I purchased it, so maybe part of the fault is with me. That's why I gave it 3 starts instead of 2. I do feel I wasted my money. The book gave me some good ideas and had me searching for easier instructions to follow so not a complete waste.
The DVD that accompanies this boxed set is very helpful to make these beautiful collections of Origami Flowers. They made great display items at my office and at home. I'd recommend this kit to anyone, especially for those who love to craft and origami enthusiasts. It also adds a personalized touch when giving floral gifts to a special someone.
The only disappointment is that the supply of paper is mostly the 2" x 2" size. Otherwise it is well illustrated and I'm sure will work well with the DVD companion teacher.
Good ideas in the book, instructions fairly easy to follow, but some of them you have to watch a CD to get the full (best) instruction.
