This book is a little pricey, but sometimes you get what you pay for. The keys are fabulous, the photography excellent, and by limiting itself to boletes, this book covers most of what you will find, at least in North America. I have been collecting, identifying, and eating wild mushrooms for years, and this is one of the best reference books of the many I've used.
This is the best reference book I have on Boletes. Because it just covers boletes it is a fairly comprehensive guide, and the book is so easy to use. The keys make it easy to identify just about any Bolete. The descriptions are in alphabetical order as are the pictures so it is easy to flip through to find what you want. The pictures are incredible! The price was well worth it for me.
This is the best Bolete book ever published, that I have seen. Each fall I identify the various species of boletes that our Pacific Northwest mycological club gathers for our annual show. The club owns one of these books and I have used it for identification and teaching purposes. When I saw the price drop online I decided to buy my own. I believe others who have written more negative reviews just have not gotten far enough into the "mushroom world" to appreciate this fine text. For those I would say "stay to the easier picture books until you have more of a command of the terminology. There are reasons why the book is arranged the way it is (pictures not next to the text)." Come back to this text when you have got the hang of using dichotomous keys and understand the terminology. I bet that then you will appreciate this book a whole lot more.
Absolutely fantastic!!! A must have for every serious mycologist.I am a mushroom fanatic of a sort. I also am foresters daughter, I was exposed to wild mushrooms before I could walk. I grew up in a society where wild mushroom collecting was a national past time. So I guess I come here from a bit of a different platform than your average reader. In season, I spend many hour most days canvassing woods, meadows and anywhere els mushrooms grow. I have dozens of mushroom guide books, but we all know one never has enough of them....The simple truth is, no matter how good mushroom book is, none of them, stand alone, exhaust the topic. One simply has to cross reference descriptions, look at different pictures of the same species, type the latin names into google and look some more. I love to identify species the are new to me. But this is mushrooms. They can provide you with a divine meal if you know what you collected, or send you to the hospital or worse if you think you know what you got in that basket. Mushrooms are delicious, exciting and ruthlessly unforgiving. Extensive library is a must. This is a very nice addition.Mushrooms are fungi. The fungi release digestive enzymes to decompose living and dead matter. There are 100,000 speciesconsisting of molds, yeasts and mushrooms. There are specific rules for collecting mushrooms and identifying them. i.e. pores, teeth and ridge networks. There are specific tree types which host mushrooms i.e. Maples host Oyster Mushrooms in the fall and early winter .
This is a very detailed guide for intermediate mushroom hunters. The descriptions are thorough, the content is very comprehensive. I currently have not found any species in my area (North Georgia) not covered. This is NOT a beginners guide. The pictures are not diagnostic, the keys however are. Beginning mushroom hunters should look to any number of other guides available in a more traditional field guide. I will be purchasing the other books by the same press pertinent to my area.
Boletes are sometimes hard to identify, and this field guide is so helpful to an amateur mushroom forager like me. I like the paperback because it's easier to pack into the woods than the larger, heavier hardback version. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about boletes.
This is a really good book if you are with your mushroom club and want to decide about the identity of a puzzling bolete. It is too heavy to carry it with you when foraging but a great book to have back at the car when you finish foraging and want to make sure of the identity of your find.
Alan Bessette was my teacher this past summer (2013) at The Humboldt Field Research Institute, Maine. The text is a well written and includes beautiful color documentation - type photographs of these fungi. The taxonomic keys are very well written and aid in the identification of Boletes, especially for beginning students. The text covers field and lab equipment and procedures as well as fungi biology and ecology for each species.
