This book totally got to me! I had to hurry and finish it, just so I could sleep at night! I love a good suspense, but I also like sweet dreams. This reminded me a bit of the "Hunger Games" type story-line. Although I have to admit I only watched the movie. In the book, Blake, stumbles on a secret. He is a resident on a prison island -where there is no easy way off. He takes action and sets up a trigger - the dead man's switch -just in case someone finds out that he knows. After his death, King, his friend receives an email from him. Blake warns him to "trust no authorities". Even King's dad becomes a suspect in the "crazy and insane things that are happening at night". By triggering the dead man's switch, King sets in motion a course of action he cannot take back. One things leads to another - suspense filled, you will not be able to put this book up til the last page is read. Who can King trust? Will he make it off the island alive? Get ready to sit on the edge as the twists unfold. There was just one thing in this book that disappointed me some. On one occasion in the book, King's dad uses a situation to introduce God. This was a possible life and death for the both of them scenario, and yet, after explaining how he came to believe in God after fathering King, he simply says, "I can't make you have faith in God... Here's my biggest and sometimes my only prayer. That whatever happens in this lifetime we'll be a family beyond." But he never explains the gospel to King so he can get to the "beyond"! To me, it seemed like a lost opportunity for a Christian author to have presented Jesus! But overall, I did much enjoy the plot and story. I believe this is a teen fiction, but I am not sure I would recommend for young teens unless they have read such kinds of books in the past and can "handle" it. It gets a little intense at times!I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my review.

Tautly-written with intense, action-packed scenes, "Dead Man's Switch" will grab you from the beginning pages and then hurtle you to the end! Brouwer does a fantastic job at building up the tension as the story progresses along, all viewed through the eyes of the intriguing youth William King. William is not your typical character, as he is living on a remote island with little contact with those living on the mainland. As such there is a certain mystique about him and his friends, and I liked the element of the unexpected that this gave not only to William but the other characters as well. I also enjoyed the way the author explores his relationship with his father, and the manner in which loving families are celebrated. While the story doesn't present a clear gospel message in and of itself, God can be clearly seen in the story, not only in the conversation William has with his dad, but also in the beauty of self-sacrifice and laying down your life for others. While written primarily for the young adult audience, I am certain that people of all ages will enjoy the interesting plot and the themes of power and betrayal, as well as considering what happens when we blur the lines between right and wrong. I strongly recommend this novel and award it 4 out of 5 stars.Book has been provided courtesy of Harvest House Publishers for the purposes of this unbiased review.

Sigmund Brouwer does not write enough adult fiction, so this book was a pleasant surprise.I picked this up for a long flight and couldn't put it down.It was a good read. I would strongly recommend this as an adventure that you will enjoy.I sure hope S.B. will write some more adult fiction.

I've been a fan of Sigmund Brouwer's books since I read the Legends of Laramie series. He has a way to make the characters real and is able to mix the real with the fiction effortlessly and bring you into the story. When I saw that he had a new book for YA coming out I knew I had to read it. And it is safe to say, Dead Man's Switch didn't disappoint!Dead Man's Switch takes you on a wild ride as you follow William King, or Lyon King to his friends, as he works his way through a mystery his friend Blake had set up for him. What scares King though is that Blake is dead, so Blake knew that people were after him and set up this Dead Man's Switch, King realizes that with the information he is uncovering, these people will be after him as well and he can't trust anyone in charge. So he has to work through these clues as fast as he can before the ones chasing him catch up.The twist and turns of this story kept me wanting to find out what was going to happen next. This was also a story that, if I had to set it down, I could pick it back up and be right back in the story with no problem. I also enjoyed that King fit his age. He was a smart kid, but he did need help and seeing that made this story all the better.Dead Man's Switch had a slight Hunger Games/ Matched feel. It's a story that could easily be a set up for a dystopian, wow! It is one that makes you think about what is going on out there that we don't know about. The remote setting of this story amplified that feeling. This was a fun book!Thank you to Harvest House, I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
