This book is an amazing look at how the Denver area once looked millions of years in the past. It starts around 300 million years ago and takes the reader on a journey through time, passing over the time of the dinosaurs and the age of mammals, and ending with Denver in the present day. It is complete with full-color paintings of prehistoric landscapes, the originals of which are on display at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. The book is detailed with information on geology and paleoecology. The information is general, but it's a good introduction to the subjects it presents.Overall it's an excellent educational tool for the K-12 classroom, or even college courses for that matter. Or, it's just a fun reference guide for any paleontology enthusiast, especially if you're from Colorado like me.
We are Colorado-ans, but not geologists. "Ancient Denvers" is a wonderful starting point towards understanding the story of front range geologic history. It provides a beginner's level overview that can be used as a jumping off point towards learning more. In addition to explaining the different ages in perspective to the front range, it also tells you places where you can see each age exposed geologically. We plan to visit these places and learn more. As avid hikers in the region we often see places of varied geology and wonder what the history is -- we are just beginning our journey of learning.
I read this interesting book as soon as I go it. I use to live in the Denver area so it meant a lot to me to see what happened so many years ago. I'm passing it on to my family to read. Thank you for having the book. I saw the program on the Velocity channel so I was able to find it on E-bay. helen
Beautifully illustrated and written book for anyone looking for an easy to understand assessment of the changes in the landscapes and animal life of Denver's Front Range over a three hundred million year span. Suitable for all ages.
This book is designed for younger readers with a general interest. Lacks specific details for someone with a desire for more specific details of fossils of the Front Range. For better info, read Kirk's OTHER book!
This book is excellent. It presents geology of the formation of sedimentary layers in the Colorado Front Range through text and illustrations. It literally brings the layers to life.
I first saw this book in a rock/stone shop I was visiting. Love the book then and still love it. I relocated here about a year ago and this book gives me a great look at my surroundings.
This is a great review of the Denver area for anyone who has an interest in ancient history and geology.
