Weber is the flora here in Colorado, and East/West Slope are a necessary part of our field gear. We are very lucky to have a plant reference of this scope and detail and I am grateful that someone took the time and effort to not only develop it, but to continue to update it.I was looking forward to the new edition, hoping that some of the more subjectively described characteristics would have been revised (they haven't). I believe most of the errors have been addressed and he does a nice job of keying the Botrychium. I did like the feel of the new paperback edition. The pages are slightly longer but not cumbersome, and it feels good in the hand. I wish they would have included some blank pages for notes.I was really looking forward to using the electronic version in the field, but I was very disapointed. The e-book does not contain the necessary links that a plant key requires. Additionally, since e-books are paginated differently than paper books, the index becomes useless. I use the index more than the keys, so that is why I returned it.In order to be useful, the e-book needs to be fully linked from the index, between the general key to the family keys, and from the family keys to the genera.
it's a great reference book. I'm learning to key plants, and this book is a must. easy to follow, easy to reference.
Weber is the master of Colorado botany and I have used his Colorado Flora for many years. The new print edition is excellent BUT the Kindle edition is utterly useless and horribly frustrating to use.Colorado Flora is a detailed botanical key but the Kindle version treats it as if it were a novel. There are almost no links, i.e., almost the only way of moving through the keys is by flipping through scores of pages with your finger or typing in a search. Doing either is 10 times more time consuming than carrying out the same in the print version. There are absolutely no links within the actual keys -- as there are, for instance, in the on-line version of the Flora of North America. Flipping back and forth through any key (standard procedure in any attempt to identify a plant) is very time consuming and very difficult.Another example: If you need to use the Index, you will find there is only one link TO the first "A" entry in the Index and then no further links. So if you wish to find a particular Penstemon, you will not find a "P" link and it will therefore take you scores of page touches to finally get to the Penstemon Index entry. But it gets even worse: although the entries in the Index have page numbers and these page numbers are hot-linked to the text, the actual pages of text have no numbers!! Since the link in the Index only takes you NEAR the Penstemon page you want you don't know whether to go forward or backward to find your Penstemon.The "Search" function is just as bad: The Search function takes, of course, balancing on your finger tips to type your query, then a very long time (often 45 seconds) to execute, and if you were looking for Penstemon strictus (or P. strictus), forget it. No results are returned even though it is, of course, in the key and in the Index. Other searches take just as long and they find every use of the word you search for, whether in the text or in a key.Save yourself a great deal of aggravation; don't buy this Kindle fiasco
This book is similar to the 3rd edition, but has perhaps 50 more species that have invaded Colorado, mostly weeds. The book is mostly keys to the species, with some photos and some drawings. Too bad there is very little information about the ranges, life zones, habitats, most distinctive characteristics, etc. We need a real flora for Colorado plants.
While the information is abundant, don't be fooled by the colorful cover.The book has what I would call "disappointing", barely adequate black and white sketches.This is for the scientist, not the person who wants to learn how to identify plants easily.If you are a hiker or gardener, looking for a guide to hep identify plants and provide informationon their size, where they like to grow, what conditions they like, don't bother buying this book.The "Rocky Mountain Flower Finder" or "Rocky Mountain Tree Finder", are better resourcesand laid out more effectively than this book.If you are a scientist, or student and need this book for a class, great. That's about the onlytarget audience I can think of that would find this useful.
I was hoping to find more information about the plants besides identification.
