This Understanding treatise is designed to help the reader grasp the fundamental concepts of administrative law. Understanding Administrative Law concentrates on the process of administrative decision-making but also deals with the substantive law of agencies when appropriate. As students progress through the course and later enter practice, they will find that substance and procedure become more and more intertwined and, in many instances, become almost inextricable. An awareness that there is no bright line between substance and procedure, particularly in the context of an administrative agency, is especially helpful to a thorough understanding of the subject.A good deal of the material in this book consists of recommendations and processes to identify administrative problems and mechanisms for organizing a reader's thinking when the problem is identified. Understanding Administrative Law highlights the manner in which a client's problem moves through the typical agency and the manner in which a lawyer copes with the various problems and issues encountered in representing clients before administrative agencies. In addition, this book contains a significant amount of material on trends in administrative law such as deregulation and regulatory reform. The Fifth Edition includes comprehensive references to recent cases and law review articles for readers who wish additional depth in any of the topics covered.

I procrastinated this semester and was overwhelmed with the amount of reading that I needed to accomplish. My professor had recommended this book as a supplement to our text book. Our final was open book and open note. This book was not helpful in that situation at all. The index is weak, and the chapters are not organized well, and it does not do a good job of explaining concepts. I was not able to use it as a helpful tool during the final.Although I had the best of intentions, I did not try to read it in advance of the final. I had a seminar paper due the same day which ended up taking priority. I want not invest in purchasing this book if there is not time to properly read it from cover to cover. This book may be okay as a supplement - but it is not designed to help someone cram for last minute preparation. If you are looking for a last minute study aid I would look somewhere else.I am reviewingUnderstanding Administrative Law in an effort to help other customers by relaying my experience with the product and providing any insight I garnered. I cannot stress enough that I use reviews and should have listened better. Many of the cites are wrong or misplaced- it appears that it was rushed and not double checked. I did not find it helpful and I usually pick up an Understanding for every class I take.

I found this book to be pretty thourough on the concepts of administrative law and well organized. Some of the cited cases were rather obscure, but in sum this book hit all the main points of Admin. Law.

Fox has written a superb introduction to administrative law and process. He illuminates complex concepts and processes, moving adroitly from an sound overview in Chapter 1 to systematic, well-organized depth chapters. Fox is attentive to the practice of Admin law and not merely the theory or precedents; it's a major distinguishing strength from alternative options. As a teacher in the field, it's the supplement I most often recommend to law students. (No, I don't know Fox but thank him here for this useful book that I have recommended beginning with the 3rd edition.)
