It is really difficult to get excited about doing the tedious task of getting together your insurance, last wishes, finances, etc. gathered together for when the time comes that your family needs the information. But this truly is the best thing you could possibly do for your loved ones. Having been through trying to sort out what was what due to unexpected deaths, this book will hopefully save others from that particular nightmare. The sections were well though out, the CD rom with the forms was very welcome....can't imagine it could be improved much unless they could automate it to dig through your papers and mind and do this for you. The material was extensive, I would have preferred a bit less information I think, but that is just me- since I admit I am unorganized and hate doing things like this.
This Nolo Planner is an excellent guide for organizing personal documents either for yourself or a loved one. While it brings up topics many of us would not like to think about, it is something we should all do at one time or another. It is written in an easy to understand manner with interesting topics and has a wealth of ideas and resources for further information, both on the Nolo website and other resources related to the topic the particular chapter covers. This book also comes with a CD-ROM that includes documents to put your Planner together both in PDF and RTF form. Some reviewers have expressed frustration with finding the RTF documents. Both are on the CD. When the CD installs, it only installs the PDF version. If you use the My Computer window to read the CD drive, right click on the CD Drive and select the Explore menue to find the Planner Files folder. Copy this folder to your hard drive. This will allow you to work with the documents on your computer. Since they are RTF or Rich Text Format documents, any word processing program like Word, Word Perfect, etc. will be able to open them and you can save them with a different name to customize the documents to your needs. The Planner contains sections for everything from Letters to you Loved Ones, kids, pets, memberships and other things you would not normally think of. Is is a great reminder of the many things you would otherwise forget to include when organizing important documents. Everyone may not need or require all of the chapter topics, but there are some great ideas for customizing the planner to your needs. As I mentioned before the references are excellent for finding out more information for specialty topics such as legal and medical matters with information about organizations to contact for more information. It is not an official legal book, but the Nolo website, w[...] is a great place to start searching for more information. My mother passed away over 10 years ago and I wish I had a planner guide like this to assist me. It has helped me to better organize my own information. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to plan for their own future or that of a loved one, it has a wealth of information valuable to anyone.
This book will help you get started with the seemingly endless task of getting your 'stuff' together. Not only is a great step by step, how to type book to get you started and actually complete this task, it includes a CD with all the forms you need, which are also in the book. The forms on the CD are in 2 formats, rtf (rich text format) and pdf's. The rtf's can be opened on any windows system with Wordpad, or any number of popular word processors. They can then be edited with your information, saved on your computer and printed out. The pdfs you have to print out blank and then write or type in the blanks. The pdfs can also be opened with macs. The forms are all in the book, and can be copied and then filled out as well. This book will make it easy to get together all your pesonal info, your last wishes, thoughts, and many other things together for your loved ones to find when you pass on or become incapable. The only thing that would be easier would be to have someone to do it for you. Which you can do, but you would have to pay them a nice chunk of change to do so.An added benefit of this book, is you can have piece of mind for yourself, because you will have all your important documents and information all in one place.... finally! To be organized... ahhhh.....
The book was good, the CD was great. You can type information into the forms and print them. Don't get the binder, it is a rip-off. You can make one for $5. No envelopes or anything other than a binder and printed tabs.
I admit it--I'm a mess. I'm fond of NOLO products, so I was happy to get to review "Get It Together." My life is simple, so I don't need many of the sections, but it's easy to pick and choose according to need. The end of the book is essentially a fill-in-the-blank workbook, which is extremely useful as notes for the CD or in its own right; in fact, it's the part I found most helpful due to the comprehensiveness and ease of use. Try as I might, though, I was unable to get the software to work in my Toshiba laptop running Vista; even when I did a search and found the files, Vista couldn't figure out what to open them with.I decided I'd rate the book alone as 4 stars and that it wouldn't be fair to penalize it for the behavior of the CD, so that's why the high rating despite the CD problems.
It has more than I need is some areas and not enough in other areas. I gave it a try, just glad I didn't pay full price. It is so important to leave the information in an easy to understand format for the family. I may be able to use part of it.
This really helps. Very well laid out, and while we are still working on it (didn't realize dying was such an affair for everyone until this book!) we are getting a sense of appreciation of what needs to go on in order for our children to be headache free. I give this 10 stars. Please buy it!
Was so sorry that there was no CD as promised in the description. It has good information, but would have been so much easier to use if there was a CD. I do want to say, when I contacted the seller with my comment, they immediately gave me full credit for the purchase. I was pleased with them and would use them again, but not the product.
