The authors suggest another method of evaluating ethical dilemmas. They suggest one examine the situation in light of medical indications, patient preferences, quality of life, and contextual features.Because the approach is clinical, rather than theoretical, some of the medical details presented are somewhat technical. This is a book for those working in a medical setting or otherwise engaged with medical ethics. I read the book based on the recommendation of a bioethics lecturer. It was further recommended recently by the Director of the Program in Medical Ethics for University of California, Irvine. --Mary Kay Buike, MSW, ACSW; Oncology Social Worker and member of a hospital Bioethics Committee
Dr. Jonsen is one the nation's germinal thinkers in the field of bioethics. Through his experience and associations at several of the renowned medical academic institutions in this coutnry he sets forth a clear systematic approach to problems in bioethics. This includes a review of his "4-box" method for approaching ethical problems and then reviews basic ethical principles as well as legal definitions. His approach to clincal dilemmas provides a refreshing analytical process for dilineating issues and conflicts.
This is an excellent, practical survey of the main areas of clinical ethics. I've used the seventh, and now eighth, edition for the past several years in teaching a course in clinical and research ethics at the University of California, Irvine. The cases are clearly presented, and representative of what physicians really encounter in clinical practice. The comments and recommendations following each case are thoughtful, well-considered and appealing. In class, we read the case out loud, and the class responds to the case with their own comments and anecdotes about related cases, or raise relevant questions.
Good presentation of the principles of clinical ethics with examples of many dilemmas and thoughtful analysis of case presentations.Very readable. Succinct. Useful. Particularly helpful for people new to the field. Highly recommended
This book is great for all in the medical field to understand the facets of medical decision making and how important is the patient's autonomy. This book points out the different factors and discusses them well.
It was a required book for a medicine and morality course. It was well written; examples/cases of applicable ethical principles were highlighted. I would recommend this book.
The book was not terribly easy to read but was jam packed full of meaningful cases that seemed to get to the point rather quickly. I would recommend this book if you are ethical and even more if you are not ethical. Just my two cents.
GRE for the person studying bioethics. Authors even have a summer seminar but if u read the book u don't need to attend. Jus my opinion.
