Written by J. William JonesThis book was Dr. Jones' final publication and according to the great historian Douglas Southall Freeman, he 'rounded out. . .a service to Confederate historiography that no other man rivaled.' All future biographies of General Lee have drawn heavily on this and other works of the prolific Baptist pastor. This easy-to-read volume is a basic biography of the great Christian general penned by one who knew him as a close friend and confidant and served four years under Lee's command as a private and chaplain.Gray-green hardcover with black lettering on front cover and spine, 504 pages.

classic reprint of one of the most moving books I have ever read. This volume taught me more about fatherhood than any book I have ever had the pleasure to read (and I have read a lot of books on fatherhood). Robert E Lee's dignity, faith, gentleness, ferocity, and his humanity all come pouring through his letters.Being raised a Northerner, and taught in the public school system, I never knew why Southerners continue to love this man, even to this day, who represented freedom, equality (to all races) and the honor of defending his homeland against invaders.Lee knew that two years into the war, slavery suddenly became the cause, because the invaders needed some justification for their most unjust war. Lee was kind to all, and helped the black race, and longed for the day where all would be free...what a wonderful read!
