I am a Lead Chaplain for a State Police Department that is trying to find its way in organizing the chaplaincy. This is by far the best rescource I have founde. It is a must read for any chaplain or supervisor at any level of an agency that is either starting up or reviewing a chaplaincy program. It is thorough but it doesn't bog you down with needless details. It has answered questions I really didn't know to ask. MUST READ!!!
If a police department or county sheriff's department wants to have a chaplain program, this is the book that can guide a committee through the process. It is written by highly qualified chaplains with many years of experience. Good resources included.
Chaplaincy in Law Enforcement is a good, basic introduction to what a new chaplain needs to know about ministering to first responders. It covers the basics, but does so basically. Some chapters are very brief, and could have provided more information. Overall it covers the basics, but because of the small demographic for whom it is written, it is pricey for a 100+ page book.
A great beginner's guide to Law Enforcement Chaplaincy. It literally covers all of the basic functions a Law Enforcement Chaplain will encounter while serving his law enforcement organization. As a clergy who has felt a calling to this specialized and often overlooked and mis-understood aspect of ministry, I found this book to have so many little "nuggets of knowledge" that now after reading the book starting for the 5th time, are starting to sink in, and become more a natural reaction than a plugged methodology. Though it is a great book for those interested in Law Enforcement Chaplaincy, it is by no means the complete chaplain's desk reference. This book opens the door to the reader, especially for novices, about law enforcement chaplaincy. It is a door way through which once you cross the threshold, begins a life long career of learning, reading, growing, skill building and development. The best resource outside of the International Conference of Police Chaplains (ICPC - http://www.icpc4cops.org) that a clergy interested in police chaplaincy will ever come across. Not a lot of theory. Just good ol' practical "on the job training" from experience chaplains from across the country whose combined experience covers about 80 years in police chaplaincy. I highly recommend it as required reading for all police chaplains in training!Rev. Bro. I found this book informative as a police chaplain, did not read anything I did not know already. I found the most helpful part in the appendix. However, for someone that has not been a chaplain this book would be a recommeded read....
More than a good "how to" book for this key component in law enforcement, this book stands on decades of experience by the author and his collaborators. It's practical and no-nonsense in tone without being "preachy." In the hope that every police agency would have people who are passionate about starting a chaplaincy program for its officers, I recommend reading David DeRevere's guildelines as a great starting point.
Great book...I am hoping to blend my chaplaincy with the local Marshall and police departments, and this book really helped me. In fact, I shared the book with the jail administrator.Chaplain Joni.Great book!
This book is a joy to read, and its title accurately states the contents. It is a good reference book to establish a chaplaincy program within a PD or SO; or to revitalize or enhance an existing one. It is geared toward law enforcement officers and law enforcement employees - it is NOT geared toward establishing a chaplaincy program for inmates/prisoners - this is a different vein, so a reader interested in that type of chaplaincy program should look elsewhere. But the authors do address this inmate program very briefly. It would serve a chaplain serving inmates well to read this book, as it accurately represents law enforcement officers and employees mentality very accurately.
