This Christian classic has helped many people focus their thoughts in the right way while going through challenging circumstances. It is filled with truths from the Bible and quotes from myriad sources. Consider, for example, this quote from George Mueller, "Be assured, if you walk with Him and expect help from Him, He will never fail you." A similar quote from C. G. Trumbull, who wrote of Dr. John Douglas Adam that, "I learned from him that what he counted his greatest spiritual asset was his unvarying consciousness of the actual presence of Jesus."She writes much about character development and overcoming obstacles. Perserverance is a theme of this book. She reminds us "Power is developed by resistance." I have been reading Streams in the Desert since 1967. I started Journaling in it long before journaling was popular. It sure did help me have a beautiful picture of God's working in my life by being able to read through the past years and see how He would turn everything out for my good, even the most horrible experiences, turned out to be for my good and a closer walk with him. So glad the Streams in the Desert journal is in print. It is a great concept. I give it away to all those near and dear to me.
I first read this book in devotional form during a time when I had fewer answers than questions. It opened my eyes to scriptural truths that are so obvious, and yet, at times, so hard to see. Now, years later, I am quite looking foward to including journal writings to enhance the fulfillment this book brings.
I noticed that my mother was using the paperback edition of this devotional to write little prayer requests and thoughts in the margins. This prompted me to buy her the journal version of the devotional which gives her much more space to write and includes the same powerful devotionals. It was a great gift!Another great idea is the "Devotions for Morning and Evening With Mrs. Charles E. Cowman : The Complete Daily Devotions of Streams in the Desert and Springs in the Valley". Even though it is a little harder to find, my mother claims that the evening devotionals which are taken from Cowman's "Springs in the Valley"are just as moving as the Morning devotionals (taken from "Streams in the Desert"), if not more so.I have been reading the paperback devotional and I enjoy it greatly. It is non-judmental and very loving. My fave devotional!
This book was given to me after the stillbirth of our daughter. I was given numerous other books in dealing with death that were too much of a reminder and not encouraging to me. This book helped me so much and is one I have given out now as a gift and one I still pick up for encouragement.
While I realize this book may have been written to target a young teen, I got this for my children aged 6yrs - 8yrs old. I'm thrilled with this book. I can see that some topics may be a bit beyond them at this point but for the most part this is a book that can grow with them. The devotionals can be related to real life situations and I can read the ahead of time and explain it on their levels of understanding. My only compliant is that there isn't a table of content to guide you to certain topics you may be looking for at the moment. Other than that, I love this book!
A friend shared her copy of this with me and I loved it immediately and had to buy my own. I have since bought extra to pass out. This devotional is specific for spiritual warfare and just the tough times we experience in our Christian walk. Rather than complaining about trials, I am now rejoicing in the gracious gifts the Lord is giving me through the trials I am facing. This is a must have for the journey.
This Bible study is designed similarly to other yearly study books in that it provides a devotion for each day of the year. Each devotion is one page long consisting of a verse (or group of verses) at the top, a couple of paragraphs of insight, and a sample prayer underneath. The text sometimes extrapolates on the above verses and sometimes it is a separate idea, concept or story that relates back to the verse. I really enjoy this study and overall I think it is better than most daily Bible studies that I have read because, even though the devotion is very short, it is meaningful, interesting, and/or challenging and insightful, and not "full of fluff" like I see too often. My kids enjoy listening to it too and the prayers are helpful in showing them different ways to pray - thanksgiving, call for help/direction, delight and worship, etc. Overall, a good study that will encourage and provide a challenge for Godly daily living, and if you read it with your child (recommend!) a good starting point for daily discussions.
