It is a journey of self expression and understanding.5 starsAbout my deck: I bought the RIDER TAROT DECK. This deck is an amazing deck and works perfectly with this guide book.

Have you ever been intrigued by tarot cards and readings? If you are a student of the tarot, then The Creative Tarot by author Jessa Crispin is a must read. The Creative Tarot is an intriguing new study guide to learning the tarot, its interpretative meanings, how to do spreads and readings. Author Jessa Crispin provides the tarot enthusiast with a comprehensive guide book that features the following:- A history of the tarot.- An indepth comprehensive look at the individual cards in the tarot deck from the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana.- A variety of spreads to practice with sample readings.- And a step by step guide / tips on how to do a tarot reading for yourself or others.I became intrigued with the tarot as a teenager when my Mom and aunts took me to my first reading. Since then I have become a student of the tarot, and I am always looking to expand my knowledge and understanding. With The Creative Tarot, I have found a fresh new study guide filled with creativity, interpretation, inspiration, and a richly descriptive illustration of the tarot that I will definitely refer back to often when using my tarot deck.Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book from the author / publisher in exchange for my honest review.

I really want to like this book. It was very well marketed to the non tarot public and feels overall like a break out kind of book; bringing tarot and the world of tarot to a public who may have not had much interaction or felt that tarot could not be useful in their lives. In this regard, Creative, I think can function as an excellent bridge for those interested in learning more about tarot. As someone who works with tarot and has studied tarot extensively this book does not really add anything to the table for those who are intermediate and above. The book is laid out by card with a couple of paragraphs that appear to be topical explanations of the cards' meaning from the authors' perspective. There is nothing there that screams "wow" here or adds a layer or dimension of meaning for me. Again, it feels, well, topical. At the end of of the description there is a very small list of 3 creative items that speak to or reference the energy of the card but nothing between these two pieces that helps the reader in understanding how to integrate or use that knowledge. I would have loved to have read from the author why she chose those pieces rather than what felt like a disparate list.My overall feeling was that this author had an idea for a book, had some connections in the publishing industry and felt that tarot being hot right now, could publish a book that would make a name for herself and/or a bit of coin. There are much better books by people who can take you deeper into the world of tarot such as Mary Greer and Rachel Pollack, to start.

Thanks. Well done. I own too many Tarot books and too many tarot decks and love them. I bought your book a week ago. Great reading and interesting. Easy writing and it put me back on the Tarot Path with a new look at my life. Tres bien!

She draws really captivating analogies to famous entertainers and innovators, which make for a fascinating way to try to remember all the nuances of card meanings. There are some great anecdotes and stories in here, and not just about celebrities—mythology, scientists, obscure authors, and histories of a lot of different cultures.

Update: Four months into the Tarot adventure which, I realize, is hardly any time at all so vast the area, I still enthusiastically consult this book as an excellent framework for understanding the cards. Crispin's explanation of the undertaking (re-interpreting the present to influence the future) as well as her take on the archetypes, the suits, the numbers, and the possible messages from the cards is a wonderful starting place for a novice from which you can grow into your own style. After reading a review in "The Week", I ordered this book from the library. At first, I thought 'this is so not me', but Ms. Crispin's approach to Tarot is completely fascinating, engaging, and intuitive. In short order, a borrowed copy just wouldn't do so I ordered my own plus a Smith-Waite Tarot Deck. What an intriguing way to engage the sub-conscious in life's journey. I highly recommend this book as a gateway for the curious into the richly symbolic world of Tarot.
