Our biology department adopted this book as the writing guide for our biology majors a couple of years ago. It includes information about how to seek for and use biological literature, how to present data (including graphs and figures) in the context of scientific writing, and it has a great section on writing research papers. There are ample examples in the book that students can use as models. The author presents information on framing the paper, and how to use drafts in order to produce a good product. There is also a section that addresses other kinds of writing skills used by biologists -- oral presentations, poster development, writing research proposals, and letters of application. We encourage students to use this book in all of their courses. It is a required support text for Principles of Biology I and II, and for our junior level Orientation to Research course.I appreciate the fact that the book is spiral bound. That makes it possible for you to have the book open by other things you are working on without it flipping shut all the time, like it would if it had a regular binding. This book with less than 200 pp. works well for us and our students. I think it could work well for you, too.Alan Holyoak, Coordinator of Biological Research, Manchester College, IN

Both college students and professors will find this book very useful as a beginning guide to preparing written and oral reports. Every biology student should own this informative, easy-to-use book.

This is a great reference for anyone regularly writing biology papers, but I was unable to find the basic information that I needed in my introductory courses. When I was allowed to switch over to APA, I did that because of the nature of my papers and the ease of the manual.

I was introduced to this text as a required book for one of my intro biology courses. I quickly found it to be an invaluable guide- especially if teachers and instructors are unclear about what they are looking for. You can still produce a solid, well-written scientific paper with this book. And it can continue to be a great guide even at a professional level. I bought a copy for myself after my courses ended to ensure i'd always have a reliable reference. In particular, its guidelines for citations are very helpful!

Most science students know that the MLA Manual of Style is useless for their classes, specially with writing intensive professors. This book is the answer to that problem. It is an English book that is tailored to the Biology discipline, even thought Im certain chemists and physicists could use it too. The spiral binding makes it easy to flip though and to have it at your desk. The first chapter also includes a list of databases that can enhance those already available through your university website. I recommend this for any undergraduate or master's student (even high school students in AP biology could use this book).

We were required to purchase this book for Cell Biology Lab. It has been a useful tool for the most part, but some parts can be confusing. Some of examples given are nothing like our professor asks us to present. It does not describe how we can make graphs with programs such as excel or little bits and pieces like that. I think a newer version with info on how to use computer programs to present our info would help greatly as well as how to make some of the characters used in science reports. When it comes to properly citing works and organizing your data in general, I found that quite helpful.

I bought this book as a required item for the class. It turns out that I didnt even need it. However, I did look through and it give very useful information on how to structure my scientific papers. Good read

Used it for scientific research papers in college. Great reference, easy to understand, plenty of examples.
