In The Voice of the Coyote, J. Frank Dobie melds natural history with tales and lore in articulating the complex and often contentious relationship between coyotes and humans. Based on his own life experiences in Texas and twenty-five years of research, Dobie forges a sympathetic and nuanced picture of the coyote prefiguring later environmental and conservation movements. He recognizes the impact of human action on the coyote while also examining the prominent role of the coyote in the myths and legends of the West.

I really loved this book. I bought it because I was doing research on Coyotes for a novel I was writing, and I thought I would skim this, but I read it word for word instead. Perhaps because I already had an interest in coyotes, but I came home every night looking forward to reading more. If you love animals, you'll love this book. Well written, easy to ready, interesting stories, etc.

J. Frank Dobie is a wonderful non fiction writer. Everything he writesis new and vibrant even though it was first written in 1947. Amazing!Great book for Texans. Great book for anyone wanting to know all about our coyotes. Amazing animals. And they are only found in the Americas.

For those who want to learn more about North America's most intelligent animal, the coyote, this is a renowned source. It is written for the average reader and you don't have to be a scientist to understand it.Coyotes have been unjustly maligned by the special interests of agriculture and hunters. However, these books are based on science and observation, not on myth and the pursuit of profit.I'd also highly recommend God's Dog by Hope Ryden God's Dog: A Celebration of the North American Coyote and Eastern Coyote by Gerry Parker Eastern Coyote as well as The Daily Coyote The Daily Coyote: A Story of Love, Survival, and Trust in the Wilds of Wyomingand Barbara Kingsolver's masterpiece of fiction, Prodigal Summer Prodigal Summer: A Novel.

This book on Coyotes was great. He can combine, history, biology, anthropology and literature. I do not think it is easy to find another source on coyotes like this one. This book is really the voice of the Coyote.

I purchased this book to reference in an art history term paper on Joseph Beuys, for some supplemental insight into the mythos of the coyote... I wound up getting distracted by this book and procrastinated finishing the paper to read it. Yes, it's that good. This book has definitely aged well. The text is well written and clear, and although this text is decades older than I am, it didn't feel dated at all. The illustrations are lovely, and the cloth cover of this edition of it is particularly handsome.Dobie's The Voice of the Coyote is a great read, I'd highly recommend it for coyote nerds like myself.

gives insight into the coyotes life

I got this book as the result of a recommendation from a naturalist. It seems to be a mix of information and story as it seeks to share about the voice of the coyote. It's been very interesting so far.

Another good book by Dobie
