This mystical work is a thought-provoking description of a contemplative discipline conveyed intimately from an unknown teacher to an unknown student. The text is a mystic exploration of the divine that rejects the use of the intellect and the imagination, preferring an inner knowing, like a numinous experience based on feeling, a gnosis of the heart. An important theme is the difference between the active and the contemplative personality; others include the awareness of self, death of the ego, and advice on leading the contemplative life. This writing is deeply embedded in Christian tradition and the author's gentleness and sense of humor are admirable. All spiritually-minded people will benefit from a study of this almost poetic text. A fantastic resource for those who practice contemplation....and a great reality check for those using any of the various more modern "translations" from the Middle English. A sure norm to ease the mind that one is not being led astray by the editor's own agenda....and as any reader of any modern version can tell from introductions by editors, they all have their own concept of what it is all about. With this edition, the reader can make sure the original author is speaking directly to them, or as close as possible in a time so far removed from the very first texts.
for me it was the best translation. i think Hodgens is the best translation available. however it was difficult for me to read. this one was much easier to read and from other reviews i've read is pretty accurate, given Gallacher's background. It also arrived very quickly.
