Cairo has a huge medeival City of the Dead encompassing an area of more than twelve kilometers from north to south. Tens of thousands of poor urban squatters live within the boundaries of these sprawling cemetaries. "Architecture of the Dead" is an architectural survey of three of the largest cemetary districts. This book addresses issues as diverse as funerary practices, architectural styles and contemporary urban land use pressures. However, the core of the book is the documentation of a thousand year vernacular tradition of tomb and mausoleum construction. "Architecute for the Dead" is a well written book and a must purchase for enthusiasts of vernacular architecture.
