I also just took the FTCE Elementary Ed exam. (4/2015) I've let my teaching certificate expire and needed to take this as part of reinstating my certification. I've been out of the classroom for 15 years, so--needless to say--I'm a little rusty on much of this information, especially the new methods and strategies that weren't around last time I was teaching. I used this book in conjunction with a (free) online module set up by the Florida Department of Education that serves as a review for this particular exam: http://www.fl-pda.org/ (You can register to the site even if you are not teaching yet.) I ended up passing all four sections of the test. I'm not giving this 5 starts because I'm not sure if I would have passed if I'd only used this book, but I did find the diagnostic and practice exams very helpful, and the subject information was very useful (although the online module went into MUCH greater depth.) This is exactly the cliffnotes model...you'll get a brief version of what you'll need to know, but if you want/need to go into more depth you'll need to use other resources. Good luck!

I just took the FTCE Elementary Education test (April 2015) and this book did almost nothing to help me prepare. I studied it extensively and used other website reference materials. The exam was so different (especially the Language Arts & Reading subset) that about halfway through the test I started to question if I was even taking the correct exam. I did not pass the Language Arts subset but somehow passed the others, mostly through eliminating the two obvious wrong answers and then guessing. Even the math was different. I can work all the math problems easily but the exam would often not ask to solve the problem but ask what type of method was represented or some other approach that didn't require to solve the problem.

I took and passed this exam on June 6, 2016 and used this book as one of my main resources. Reading the reviews here made me VERY nervous about the exam! I was seriously scared that I was not going to pass at least one of the sections on my first attempt. Although I agree that this should not be your only resource, if you read this book, go over some of the practice tests available online (the FTCE K-6 exam booklet online has some examples and google for additional practice tests), and cover the review module at the professional development website, you will be very prepared for the test. I agree that not every single question on the exam was covered in these resources, but I would say more than 90% is covered if you study the book and go to the Florida professional development website and review the study module there.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. If I could rate it any lower I would. Countless and precious hours were wasted. This book has very little in common with the state exam other than the name on the cover. Do yourself a favor and find other sources. This is my opinion, you will have to decide for yourself.

I took the FTCE Elementary Education K-6 exam on 03/27/15 and passed all sections. I studied the 2013 XAMOnline book I checked out from our local library then decided to purchase this book when I realized the exam changed in May 2014 and thought maybe the XAMOnline book was outdated. After taking the exam I am so thankful that I had read the XAMOnline book. Honestly, I felt like the questions in this Cliffsnotes book were easy compared to the actual exam but it summarized some of the data in an easier to understand format. I know both books definitely helped me gain knowledge of the information but I feel the XAMOnline book practice questions were more true to the exam questions. I am a career changer - I received my bachelors in business over 15 years ago. I studied for the exam over 20 days (studied XAMOnline first 9 days & Cliffsnotes last 10 days) while I still worked 40hrs/wk, caring for my family of 4 and kids activities. I just studied every change I had ... it was difficult but somehow made it though. Best of luck to you!!!

I read the reviews for this book so I was slightly apprehensive about it, considering a lot of reviewers said the book was a total of waste of time. That couldn't be further from the truth! I just took the test today and I passed (thank You G-d!!) and I found that a lot of information I had read in this book was on the actual test! Yes, the questions are VERY different on the test, but the content is almost the same. Besides this book, I also spent time taking and reviewing a free online test at this website [...]which I found to be very helpful. I'm really glad I bought this book, and its price is unbeatable! I also suggest learning where countries and oceans are on the map. The test is very challenging but I appreciated the time I spent studying this book. Also, take all the practice tests in the book! And if there's anything you read that you're not clear on, google it! Every bit of extra knowledge you have can only help. Good luck!

Maybe this will help others...I took all parts of this test yesterday and did not pass. The information in this book was nothing like the actual test. The concepts in this book are good general k-6 knowledge, but not for the actual test. Maybe I got a complete different version of the test, I don't know. I would suggest that you look elsewhere. I also used the fl-pda.org website (like others) to study from and the concepts were completely different than what was on the test. It is frustrating to know that there is no actual accurate material to study from. Out of the 220 questions, about 10 are somewhat similar to what is in the book, and they are mostly from the science part. For example, one question asked "which animal has an open circulatory system?". The section that is most off is Social Science. Not 1 question was in any way similar to this book. Nothing about the Florida part either. 90% of the questions had to do with situations. For example: "A 6th grade E.L.L student is having difficulty reading, which is the best approach to increase his reading skills?" All options for the answers were correct, but you would have to find the BEST approach. Also the answers are set up differently. Usually there would be 1 obviously wrong answer, but the other three choices were very similar to each other with the exception of one or two words. I will be looking elsewhere.
