This book is built on the premise that students remember little of the grammar that may have been taught to them and, therefore, it establishes a foundation. It then builds toward the specifics that one might find on ACTs and SATs. I have been teaching for 35 years and have never found a "perfect" textbook, but the grammar in this book is not only useful for the short answer portions of the exams, it is useful for practical application on the ESSAY portions as well. Formal grammar is difficult, and students often need a teacher/tutor to explain the fine points, but generally my students have found this book to be user friendly and very helpful. I even know students who have recommended this book to friends who do not have tutors for the exams. This is the best "crash course" in grammar out there.
It was helpful, but it focuses a lot on understanding grammatical terms, which I don't care about. I just want to know proper grammar, not what the part of the sentence is called. There was also not nearly enough practice. I like that it teaches some grammar points and then follows with questions on those points. However, many grammar points are just taught, with no questions. It would be a great workbook if it had more questions. It helped, but it's not what I hoped it would be.
This book has some good explanations for writing topics, but like many other books, it just doesn't give enough test-style exercises (i.e. multiple choice questions) . It does have practice tests modeled after the SAT, ACT and high school English exams. That's a plus, if you want more problems to do.Overall, I don't recommend buying this book b/c there are better books out there, like the Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar!
I took the test without reading this book and scored only a 320 on the writing section and after reading this book I scored a 540! I increased my score by 220 points! This book is all you need to score well on the SAT, it's for anyone who's taking the test just from bare knowledge and doesn't remember grammar. I took the test and scored over 200 points more 2 years ago without fully understanding the concepts and I was just an average guy with average grades, this is a book based on memorization. It has enough questions for you to score as high as you want to plus its a small book. You don't want a book that over complicates simple concepts. There's not much to criticize when it gets results, the only reason you would have a problem is if you did not put in the time to memorize the book which is easier with this book than with any other.
I have been using this weekly since early August. Student like it. It is very thorough in its content converage. The checkpoint exercises are especially helpful. I also train college level tutors to work with high school students in our program, and they also find the material helpful and easy to review and teach.
I recommend this book to all the test takers (sat an act) because I consider it to be an insightful and complete workbook, containing everything you need to know about theory and helpful exercises. Good luck on your standardized tests!
This book has done an excellent job with helping me to improve on my English skills! I am recommending this book to everyone!
This is all right. My daughter has worked through it quickly, and she's 14. Either she's brilliant at grammar (okay, she is. Someone in the family had to get that talent) or the book is easier than it should be. Still, grammar is important, especially with all the texting shortcuts taken today. This is a good source for educating your kid.
