I used this book almost exclusively to study for the American Literature CLEP test, and passed with a 66. I read the book in about 5 days, taking notes to review later, and then looked up a couple major lit pieces that I was unfamiliar with on Sparknotes just so I had the plot overview and major characters familiarized. ( House of Mirth, Age of Innocence, The Awakening, etc ) I also did a quick review of literary terms, since those were not included in this book, and I was a little rusty. ( Sonnets, Ballads, Heroic Couplets, Alliterations, etc. ) All in all, I felt like this book provided me with a good overview and enough information to pass the CLEP, though if you're looking for a higher score, you may need some additional resources.Also, I should note that I had previously passed the Analyzing and Interpreting Literature CLEP, and was easily familiar with the "interpreting" part of the American Lit test from my experience with the A&I test.
Info on the authors was helpful, recommended reading list was lengthy - I read most of the poetry and found overviews for most of the suggested novels and received a 67 on the CLEP.
This book was a great review tool. The only issue I had with it was that if there were recommended readings that I needed to study up on it didn't provide any text and simply provided a reading list. If English wasn't your thing going through school you may need a lot of supplemental reading for this study guide. It was perfect for brushing up though.
I wasn't overly impressed with this prep book. It refers the reader to lots of other resources, rather than including the information in the text directly. The two practice tests are the best resource in the book. I ended up purchasing The Complete Idiot's Guide to American Literature as well, and passed the CLEP. The CD included is not Mac compatible and I could not find a mac version on the publisher's website.
Helpful information about what to read to prepare for the CLEP on American Lit. Very useful information about the different periods and best of all has recommendations for portions of larger works to read if you're in a time crunch.
I always use the REA Guides for my CLEP tests and American Literature is no exception. I like how the text is easy to understand and that the book includes 2 practice tests that are in the same format as the CLEP.
I purchased this book after reading other reviews, and seeing one where someone said they passed the American Literature CLEP exam after reading only this book. I can say nearly the same thing. I did read a little bit of the recommended readings, but probably a minuscule portion of what is recommended. Honest disclosure: had it not been a multiple choice exam I don't believe I would have passed!
I prepared for the CLEP for six weeks. While I found the additional reading least quite lengthy, very little of the material listed in the book was even on the exam itself. I only scored a 52 on the exam, which for the college I attend, was not sufficient to pass the course. Not a happy camper.
