Dynamite book! Tells the story of the making of a tortilla from seed to table. Lends itself to discussion of human resources and culture. The paintings in the book are extraordinary. The book is short, but has much to be learned from it. Highly recommend as an anchor book for writing, literature, reading, and social studies.
This book works very well for teaching human, natural and capital resources to third graders. We read the book aloud, and then went back and categorized all the resources used to make a tortilla.
I found this at our local library and it's one of my 3 year old son's favorite books. I've now bought a copy because he knew it by heart after we returned our library copy. I've read other Gary Paulsen books and have enjoyed them as well, but this simple story with it's beautiful illustrations is one of our family favorites.
The Tortilla Factory is a lovely book which shows children that tortillas don't just happen.Tortillas are made of corn, and that corn is grown in the soil with the care of the men and women that nurture it. The corn is also part of a chain of commerce that leads from the field to the factory to our tables.Great book to share. Little ones will like the warm colors and images. Older children will be given something to think about.
