Book should have color pictures. Lake Huron holds tons of hidden treasures. All you have to do is look down and Petoskey stones are absolutely everywhere. Come to the Alpena area and walk along the shoreline or even in the woods and within an hour you can fill an entire basket with gorgeous fossils. There are many other mineral deposits here but I can't find a good book, with color pictures, that tells me what in the world am I holding in my had.
The book's title, "The Complete Guide to Michigan Fossils" leads the reader to expect a useful field guide, but the book's poor-quality fuzzy black and white photos are not helpful.On the plus side, the writing is straightforward and engaging. The author has done many school presentations, and he's figured out a simple, easy to understand explanation for many geological concepts. A sizeable portion of the book is dedicated to where to find fossils in Michigan, including directions to various sites. While this might be helpful to some, it's not what I was expecting out of a field guide. Perhaps a better title would be "Where to find fossils in Michigan."The most helpful section is the last forty pages, which actually describe the most common fossils found in Michigan. Here the photos are sharper, but still feature grey fossils on a dark background, in a black and white photo. The best photo is on the cover.
This book has lots of great information. I grew up in Michigan and didn't know about some of the fossels. Now when I'm looking for rocks and fossels I can identify them. And I now look for specific ones. Plus it gives you ideas on different places to find some. Very happy with this choice
Good Michigan rock picker book. Does lack the color to appreciate the colors of rock and sediment. My nephew loved the Michigan history and did a great book report with this book, in fact I don't think he's given it back yet. I would buy again at a used book price.
Need color photos and something in the photo to give a size perspective.
