I bought this book as a gift for my cousin. Paired with few small fossils, it makes a great gift for any youngster. It doesn't feature EVERY fossil out there, but rather offers a vivid example of major items. It shows a picture of each-DK Books are great for pictures, I highly recommend their travel guide series--along with an artist's reproduction of what the animal may have looked like in life, and pertinent info about each. I would buy it again, and in fact, I wish I had ALL the DK Books, because every one I've ever seen was great.
I gave this book to my 9 year old son for Christmas and he loves it. It is very easy to read and the pictures are extremly interesting and detailed to look at and study. There is a lot of information for him to look through, which means he will be able to read this book over and over again. This book will be a great reference for any upcoming projects or reports he may choose to do for school.
This is a fantastic reference book with great pictures and information about lots and lots of fossils. I bought it for my now 6 year-old last Christmas and he carries it around with him constantly -- to school, to his grandparents' house, to daycare... He is well known for teaching the adults all about fossils. My husband has a geology degree so we've taken family vacations that were based on fossil-hunting. This is a great book for all ages!
The Smithsonian Handbooks collection is quite good on this and similar topics. I've had some exposure to items shown in the book and the photos and descriptions here are quite helpful for me, as a beginner to this topic. I'm particularly interested in the ammonites. Great primer to get you interested in the things you've seen already and many of the other types of fossils you haven't.
Beautiful Book!Everything you would expect it to be from Smithsonian. Our 8 year old is a Dinosaur lover who has absorbed so much about dinosaurs, she has moved on to a curiosity of Fossils, preservation and the like.Very glad we invested in this for her. She has thumbed through it twice already, and that's some stiff competition on Christmas Morning! She even placed it in her bookshelf with her Dino encyclopedias. A sure sign she appreciates it!
Has had every fossil we have found so my son can identify them easily. Great basic fossil book for the budding paleontologist to have on hand. He has already put post it markers on all the pages of fossils he has found. And logged them in another book with photos so people who come over can identify and read in the book about his finds. (did I mention he is 7) Reading level obviously a bit higher than when could read when he got it, but great photos. Has been very helpful.
Decent reference book for the beginner fossil collector. Enough info to whet your whistle, but not quite enough to enable identification of fossil impressions in a natural state. Many pics of polished and perfect fossils that can be purchased at a gem store, however, I wasn't able to identify a majority of fossils I've collected. A decent reference book for the money.
Useful for an introductory class in geology. Features of the fossils are nicely photographed and clear to see. Some professors will prefer drawings with more detailed notes on special recognition features.
