This is a helpful book-sort of. In my 1997 edition on page 57; Albuquerque is named as the State Capital of New Mexico-oops. If you can get past that and trust the author Mr. Voynick not to get you lost-well take lots of water and a really GOOD map such as The Roads of New Mexico (Shearer Publishing). The locations and maps are generally okay though, but some locations are quite vague . As with most guides however, conditions, access, land ownership, etc. may have changed since publishing. This isn't the book if you are just passing through or on a short vacation and want good specimens fast. However, several excellent museums are mentioned, so that's good. Also, the Mineral Guide in the back of the book is handy, but a color field guide is better. There are no color photos in this book, but the black and whites are numerous and generally accurate. This is an okay book if you really know the state of New Mexico, have lots of time, are willing to research the locations, talk to the locals and the like.
Lots of interesting data about different rocks in the NM area. It was well written and was easy to read. Would have loved to have some guidelines about approaching people who have certain rocks on their property. Found one location but the rock area was actually located about 20 miles from the road. I didn't have the right gear and no guide but still was a nice drive.
I look forward to being able to go tho New Mexico and discover these treasures for myself. Much information that will be helpful when I get there.
no comment needed.
Thanks you!!
