Farming With Horses (Country Workshop)

In the early twentieth century, the proliferation of farm tractors dramatically eased the burden on America’s farmers. It seemed the day of the horse-drawn plough was well over. And yet today, with a new generation working smaller spreads for reasons of necessity, economics, or personal conviction, draft horses are going back to work in a big way, and proving their worth once more. This book, by a widely respected trainer of working horses, aims to show those new to farming with horses—or those simply in need of a brush-up—everything they need to make the old ways work like new. With a wealth of color illustrations and clear, to-the-point prose, Farming with Horses reviews the different types of harness and collar, explains how to select a work horse and how to hitch a horse to an implement, and fully describes lateral and longitudinal alignment, rein grips, and every other aspect of farming with horses.

"Farming with Horses" is THE ONLY book i have found that explains, in depth, the engineering behind the correct way to hitch. it is lavishly illustrated with color photos and graphics. i have recommended it to drivers of single horses all the way up to 4-in-hands. Don't be put off by the title...it is a MUST HAVE reference for anyone who drives carriages as well as farm machinery.

This is the best book on driving horses that I have ever read, and I've read everything on the subject that I can find. The information is not confined to farming with horses. There is valuable information on training, hitching, aligning teams and many other things that is applicable to any type of horse driving. This is a must book for beginners and experience professionals as well.Dwight G. Bennett, DVM

Steve Bowers is a master at driving. His straightforward, logical approach keeps the principles in this book clear and easy to implement. Bowers keeps both horse and driver safe and working together. Whether you're heading for competition or just work around the ranch, this is a must read. You can apply "Farming with Horses" to any driving discipline.

If you own a farm and are looking to add horse power to your available tools, FARMING WITH HORSES is a top pick reference. It covers everything from equipment - harnesses and leads - to training methods, how to hitch a horse to an implement, and caring for the working horse. Chapters pack in color photos and detailed references for every step of the way.Diane C. DonovanCalifornia Bookwatch

The information in Farming with Horses is presented in a clear, and readily understandable manner. This book answers the how and why of harness fit, hooking to a vehicle or implement and how to do it all safely. The photos illustrating the text are of the highest quality. This book is a must read for anyone interested in driving whether for pleasure, show or work.SMCannon D.V.M.

The text and photographs in this book are equally instructional. Especially enlightening is the book's emphasis on the humane approach to farming with drafts -- an approach that benefits the horse, the driver, and the land as well.

This book provided an excellent read and a good overall picture of the topic. Even though it is written for the American market it has a lot of information that is transferrable to Australia and other countires. A good buy for people interested in the topic, especially for beginners such as myself.

This is a excellent book for beginners wanting to learn how to harness, hitch and drive draft horses. The high-quality photos are excellent, and the text is well-written and easy to understand. There is very good information here which is not to be found in other books on draft horses. This book does not really teach how to farm with horses, but it does teach you everything you need to know before you actually go out and plow a field. I would like to see a sequel which goes into actual farming with horses. This is a very useful book.
