This book is easy to use, informative and quite helpful to the texas fossil hunter. The pictures cover a very broad range of texas fossils, and though not always in color, are very helpful in identification.
I have used this book to refer to numerous times. It gives a very good perspective of the diversity of the geography of Texas. Good book, thanks for writing it, Chuck. Jessy Boedeker The Texas Fossil Collector
I find this book to be very clear and concise, knowledgeable and user friendly. I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about fossils in Texas and fossils in general. The author was kind enough to examine two fossils I found near Lake Lewisville and I was also fortunate enough to meet the author on the day of his 75th birthday and he autographed my copy.
This is a disappointment. My primary objection is to the black and white pictures which are often too overexposed or too underexposed or very obscured by shadows to be of much, if any, help in identifying finds. Very frustrating. I was also very disappointed in the meager treatment of microfossils in the identification section - they were hardly dealt with at all. That was puzzling because the opening text had a nice discussion about collecting microfossils (though it includes misguided advice to use diluted white glue to affix your specimens to slides - a commercial glue for this purpose or your own solution of gum tragacanth powder and water is the way to go). I did like much of the opening text which provides a nice, general treatment of fossils and offers a good introduction to the geology of Texas. I think you get the overall picture; I didn't like this identification guide.
This is a great reference book. Has helped me identify a lot of the fossils I've found on the land where I live. If you live in Texas and are intersted in fossils, I would highly recommend this book.
The Field Guide to Texas Fossils is an excellent resource guide for working in the field. We found we already had some rare sharks teeth and were able to identify them in the book.
I found this book very helpful and take it with me in the field when I am looking as it helps identify fossils I am finding. Very useful book to have for those who live in Texas.
Excellent pictures which are needed when you read the descriptions of each specific fossil.Very well written and detailed book of fossils within Texas.
