I teach at the local community college and for the first semester teaching "Weather and Climate", I was handed Ahrens' paperback version of this text. The hardback version is only a few dollars more and includes much more information. Each chapter deals with just a single topic of weather phenomenon, such as a separate chapter about tornadoes and a different one on Hurricanes. Extreme weather is not grouped together into a single chapter. The layout of the material is process oriented. This text will give easy-to-understand information about the processes of meteorology. In simple language, Ahrens explains why weather "happens", but the book does not dwell on the mathematics of the processes, so is easy to understand by non-technical people. The graphics are first class, the associated publisher's web site for this text hosts quite a bit of content related to the text, and the text is updated frequently to include the latest weather phenomenon, such as last year's hurricanes. If I were to have a complaint, the text is light on world weather. World air circulation, ocean current, and other small-scale meteorological factors are discussed. But, other than part of a chapter dealing with the Köppen system, large-scale weather outside the United States is not investigated to any degree of depth. For example, if I wanted an understanding of seasonal weather that I would encounter in a visit to Italy ... I would be much better served with an internet search. However, having said that, I teach this class and this is the textbook I use above all of the others available today. I have not found a better one.

The title is very apt. For anyone interested in descriptive concepts (no maths)of general meteorology and environment systems - how they work, this book covers just about every topic of interest to us today. Content is clearly laid out and easy to understand. The graphics are first class. This is a great book for basic understanding of the workings of our atmosphere. I congratulate the author. As a companion and for further indepth knowledge (with simle maths) I suggest Meteorology for Scientists and Engineers.

This is a great book. It was expensive (aren't all college textbooks?), but worth it.As a beginning weather hobbyist with a new weather station, I have been looking at many weather books over the past couple months. I have been disappointed. Most seem geared to elementary school levels. A couple handfuls are for the general population, a few intermediate, and a couple handfuls are for more advanced hobbyists or professionals. This book was one of the very few that I would strongly recommend. The information is great and presented very well. It is colorful and slick (yes, substance is more important than slickness, but this book has both).I found the CD less than useful, so I tried it and removed it. You won't be missing anything, really. The book has it all. Just a great book.

This text is a very basic introduction to the world of meteorology. The writing style is very simplistic, as the book seems to be intended for non-science majors. There are very few quantitative portions and the few math portions that are there could use a little more expansion. All in all, this book is suitable for anyone who wants an introduction to the weather without having to do numerous calculations.

For a meteorology reference tool, save money and buy the book used without the CD or infotrac. The blueskies CD is only good for one year from activiation according to the license agreement and infotrac is a 4 month subscription to online databases that are largely available for free at the public library.

I am enrolled in a Meteorology course right now. I bought this book sometime ago to get ready for the coursework in Meteorology. I had read a bunch of books prior to this one and I found this book to be well written. Easy to understand and great illustrations make it easy for anyone to understand it. May be a bit too basic for some. If you need to know more about Meteorology and want to know more than the average Joe...then buy this book....you won't regret it. I love it!

Overall, an excellent intro level text book to meteorology. Fantastic diagrams and photographs. The only thing wrong with it is that some of the cloud photos could have been a little more precise and done a better job at picking that type of cloud for the photo. Nonetheless, it's a great book overall, and I do plan to keep this one even after the semster is finished.

This is the best college level introductory meteorology text I have seen. It has a wide range of topics, covering most if not all meteorological phenomena, but does so in a way that non-scientists can understand. Excellent photographs and diagrams.
