This is without a doubt the best metal detector I have ever owned and I owned my first one in 1971. The three modes (all metal and disc 1 and disc 2) work great and switch with a mere touch of one button with your thumb. YOu never have to use two hands, all the switching you wish to do can be done with one hand. The 5x8 coil is the best for coins and small items, much better than the larger coil that comes with the AT pro. The reason I went with the Gold and not the Pro is the cost of the coil, if you figure in the cost of the added 5x8 coil, the Gold is a better buy! The large coil on the Pro is not as good in reviews as the 5x8 coil so that is the reasoning for going with this Gold and the circuitry is better on the gold also, the only drawback is that it can not be used in salt water...you can use it on the ocean sand beach just not in the salt water.I have already had my Gold wet as I was hunting in the rain. Works great. Very lightweight, very small, love it.I might add that this detector has controls that are easily understood if you watch the DVD that comes with the detector, the controls are easier to understand than my old CZ-5 detector (Fisher). This is the first detector I have owned that has depth display, and the first with "notch discrimination", as it has 3 different modes of operation 1. all metal 2. discrim one and 3. discrim two. The discrim two has the notch discrimination. You can also dial up the iron discrimination from 1 to 40.

I have been metal detecting for 20+ years, but never spent over $200 on a machine. I have found good stuff with those machines but they always lacked in a few key areas. Such as Depth, ability to find small gold nuggets and the ability to get wet. This machine the Garrett AT Gold excels at all of these areas. I can now detect in the water, gold prospect and find targets deeper.. I am very happy with this machine.

The authors have so much enthusiasm for their topic that I truly wanted to write a positive review, but unfortunately their enthusiasm is the only redeeming quality of the book. True, you can learn some things about searching for gold with a metal detector. And although the authors disclaim any purpose to sell their products, they refer to them exclusively on the grounds that they are most familiar with them. Well, OK, but it still has an uncomfortable feel to it. And I felt I was unable to translate many of their instructions to generic terms (for use with any brand metal detector).Early on you are advised that terms are defined in the glossary. But they should also be defined in the text so that one does not have to continually stop reading and refer to the glossary. This is basic to didactic writing. For example, the term "placer" is used many times before it is defined. Ground balancing (canceling) is treated the same way. There are several passages that are repeated verbatim in different chapters and you are left wondering if you have somehow read the current chapter already! It appears that the editor of the book was in a great rush, or extremely inexperienced. I could not find any reference to RAM publications on the web. The editor was found, and seems to be mostly associated with the works of Garret and Lagal. Was it worth the price? I suppose, as I at least felt the excitement of hunting for gold. But it would be better titled as a companion to one of the Garret manufactured metal detectors. I still hope to find a book on using the metal detector as a hobby that is a better-written "how to" book that speaks in generic terms about metal detectors.

And this is it.Me- I couldn't care less about metal detectors, but my husband does! After seeing that Treasure Hunters show on TV, that was all he could talk about, so I got this for him for Christmas. Before purchasing, I researched thoroughly as to brands, features, reviews, etc. I came to the conclusion that Garrett AT Gold was the best combination of quality, options and durability for the money, and it has lived up to its expectations andHe used it several times and each time, loves it more! In fact, his cousin liked it so much he went and bought one just like it the very next day! (Don't tell him, but he paid a lot more for it elsewhere. People never learn- is almost always a better deal on things like this! )

The AT gold is a Excellent machine , needs some getting used to. Since I have the bounty hunter 505 pro also . Getting used to the different features is my only hump on the road but I'm sure I'll master this machine as I did with the 505 ,I was gonna sell the 505 but decided to keep them both. I've already collected lots and lots of coins now I want to get the good stuff. Jewelry .. I've already found some jewelry but want a machine that really gives me a better chance I hope the AT gold is my ticket. Thanks mike

Easy to use if you watch the video and play with it for awhile. Very helpful features. Light weight and well built. You can simultaneously see signal strength, type metal and depth. Plus the sounds help differentiate the target. With a push of a button it pinpoints your target. I wish it had backlighting for dusk, dawn and night use though.
