I was walking past a display of new books last week and saw Communicating Rocks. The title looked fun, so I picked it up for a quick peek. An hour later, I was still reading it. It is excellent. I've edited technical writing for over 50 years, and this is one of the best books I've found. It is NOT just for geologists/geology. Clear writing almost compels the writer to produce good science in ANY field. The book's style is appealing and clear. A great book.
It's a little light on how to structure/write proposals and papers, but is an excellent resource about grammar and phasing that should be used in geologic reports. This text pairs nicely with Writing Science: How to Write Papers That Get Cited and Proposals That Get Funded. I utilize both of these texts while writing manuscripts and proposals, and recommend them to all of my students and colleagues whenever they come to me for technical writing assistance.
