Great pic, good in depth look at the growing process of agates. Several different varieties of agates are categorized along with maps of location on the lake. A nice book for $13 bucks, 250 pages, hardcover. Join my page "Agate Hunter" on Facebook.
If you are beachcomber up on Lake Superior like my wife and I are and love collecting agates this book comes with my highest recommendation. This is written by a father and son who run an agate shop in Two Harbors. They did an amazing job with the write ups and the photographs are second to none. This is a great way to learn about the different kinds of agates and how they are formed. It has made our agate hunting even more enjoyable.
Boy oh boy : You'll read some nice reviews about this book, and everything they say is true. You may have heard that the process by which agates are formed remains somewhat mysterious, and this book will provide you with a complete and up-to-date rundown on all of the competing academic theories from 300 years ago to the present. Trust me when I say that you'll end up informed about every single aspect of just how mysterious the process really is.Anything at all that you've ever seen inside an agate nodule is covered in it's own section too.All illustrated with high quality pictures of wonderful Lake Superiors for you to drool over.Even if you'll never own a Lake Superior of your own, you'll never look at the nodules you do own in the same way again.Highly recommended.
Fantastic photography with detailed descriptions, as well as lots of background information and history of rock formation. Interesting to find out how the earth formed and how it left these little, and sometimes not so little gems for us to admire.
I don't normally write reviews, but I felt compelled to with this lovely book! I found the pictures to be absolutely stunning, and the text was well-written and enjoyable. The authors are to be commended for a wonderful book! A wonderful introduction to Lake Superior agates for the novice collector, as well as the expert.
Do you want to know how agates form? There are multipe theories discussed in this book. What are some of the different types of Lake Superior Agates? You will see pictures and complete descriptions of the different types of Lake Superior Agates. Agates of Lake Superior - Stunning Varieties and How They Are Formed is a new book by Dan and Bob Lynch. It is a wonderful addition to any library or coffee table. I have just started reading the book and I have allready learned that the idea that oxidation of the iron in the agates when they are exposed at the near surface of the earth gives them their color, may be a misconception. If you like Lakers, you will like this book!
My friend Nancy & I have numerous books on Lake Superior Agates. We try toplan every other vacation to include a section of the path of the agates thatthe glaciers made. This book is the best we've ever seen on the subject, and by a wide margin. A wonderful job by these authors and the price of this gem of a bookis , truthfully, too low. A great gift idea.
This will be a Christmas gift for our grandson who is in second grad and is just beginning to be more aware of the world around him. It is one of the gifts he had asked for after seeing some agates while visiting on a previous visit.
