Download Free (EPUB, PDF)

This completely updated and revised, full-color edition of Rockhounding Utah reveals the grandeur of the state's exposed formations, its canyon walls etched with fossils, and the spires and arches of the Needles District in Canyonlands National Park. Each description of the 86 state's sites includes concise information on the material to be found there, the tools to bring, the best season to visit, the vehicle to drive, or when a remote find suggests it's time to lace up the hiking boots. Readers will glean new insights into the obsidian of the Black Rock sites, jasper at Hell's Backbone, petrified wood at Bullfrog Turnoff, and fossils of sea lillies along the Wasatch Range.

This book now has colored photos thru out the book and it only has 69 sites, not 86 sites like it says. The reason for this is because of the Grand Staircase - Escalante National Site which took in 17 site that are not longer available to hunt rocks in. I deleted them because of this. I hope everyone enjoys this book and puts it to good use. I am thinking of doing another one of more sites in the future. Gary Warren

With the exception of one entry, all 4 places I chose to visit in the book had very accurate direction descriptions. I was pleased with it. I visited several locations in the Minersville greater area.

The color pictures, maps, and detailed step-by-step instructions were very helpful in finding the actual place to look for the rocks. Even though this book was recently updated, some things have already changed (a gate that was mentioned for one spot had been removed, etc. ), so it's still a little tricky to know if you're in the right spot sometimes. Overall, just what we were looking for to get us started on rockhounding in Utah!

Great book! Tons of great information. It gave me so many ideas for rock hounding trips around Utah. After reading the book, there are now so many places I want to go now to look for rocks. Can't wait!

I am hoping to utilize the explicit directions and digging advice to find rocks worthy of lapidary in my retirement! Regardless of what I find, exploring is the best of all worlds, getting exercise, seeing this beautiful land of ours and if I find keepers, all the better,!

I have a lot of books on rockhounding in Utah and other parts of the Intermountain West. This book is a treasure! Well written, well illustrated, and detailed enough directions to some great sites. This is the first one of this series I have purchased but I will be getting The guides for other states I travel to.

Great book. I've done about 20 or so of the sites so far. Accurate directions for the most part. It's been fun to travel to these sites and find others along the way.

Good book to get you started in Utah. Good directions, and interesting reading on states geography. I would recommend this book.
