WOW! As a 5 year collector, I was impressed by both the information and the quality of the pictures in this book. This will be a huge help in understanding how to find tourmalines when I collect in New England. The pictures sure get me excited for Spring, when I can begin the hunt!
This is a so so review of Granitic Pegmatites. It covers some of the basics, but misses out on the more pertinent details from the past 10 years. Why, for example, did he NOT discuss the 7 orders of magnitude of crystal grain size in these magnificent rock bodies? Consider, a normal granite may have a most 3 orders of magnitude difference from the smallest to largest crystals. Why then, to their pegmatites range from 2 * 10^1 meters in length down to 1 * 10^-6 meters? Nor was there any discussion on the cooling characteristics, which have recently been proved to occur on the order of Days to Weeks, NOT Millions of Years!
King's book is not technical or boring. He takes care to lead the reader stone-by-stone in explanation of how pegmatites are formed. His years of knowledge still speak to the layman and more experienced collectors as well.Beautiful photos of some of the mineral kingdom's most beautiful and famous pegmatites.
I'm just loving this item from the Schiffer Earth Science Monograph. Written by Van King, this colorful book dives deep into tourmaline, beryl and quartz heaven, granite pegmatites. Easy to understand, while explaining some complex issues, with plenty of eye candy with colorful crystal photos, I can highly suggest this!
Great book for beginning or long time rockhounds. Many photos to help explain the text. I foung it very useful in my rock collecting and identification.
