Abbi Glines is one of my favorite authors, so, to say that I was like a little kid on Christmas morning anticipating the release of this book is an understatement. I assumed it would be a great read because, Abbi has yet to disappoint, but, I was absolutely blown away by Until Friday Night.I am not one to get emotionally attached to characters. While I love reading and getting lost in another world for a bit, I don't often find myself physically feeling the emotions that the characters are feeling. But, that's exactly what happened while reading Until Friday Night. I cried, I laughed, I felt triumph and sadness, but, most of all I had hope. The writing was flawless. The story line was sweet and full of emotion. The characters, even the side characters, were all well-developed and easy to relate to. Maggie, the lead female character, is one of the strongest female lead characters that I've ever read. She's someone I would have wanted to be friends with in high school. And, Abbi managed to get the "high school football player" down perfectly. I'm pretty sure I went to high school and was friends with half the Lawton Lions football team.To be honest, I'm not great with coming up with exactly what to say in reviews, but, what I can tell you, is that Until Friday Night is my favorite book by Abbi Glines and easily, my favorite book of 2015.
Once I started this book there was no putting it down. This was a story with a believable storyline and believable characters with depth. I look forward to the entire series and enjoyed the small glimpse of the guys the future stories will be about, at least I hope they are!!!
Abbi has way of writing that just flows when you read it. This book made me laugh and cry and most of all think about what many young adults must go thru and how they come out on the other side better for the support of friend and loved ones. I could feel the small southern towns energy and the force that brought West and Maggie together . This book made me just curl up and just read. Just enjoy it I did.
Abbiâs best yet!! Definitely my favorite. Once I started I couldnât put it down. This one felt like so much more to me. Anyone who has read her books will understand. Soo deep and the writingâ¦.simply wonderful. Seems our girl has stepped up her game. Canât wait for the next ones!!
Maggie Carleton has just moved to a small town in Alabama to live with her Aunt, Uncle and cousin Brady a couple of years after a tragic event made her isolate herself and stop talking. She is intuitive and caring, but a little bit lost as she tries to fit into her new world.West Ashby is a handsome, popular, star football player, but is dealing with his own pain and anger. He copes by avoiding the problem, pushing people away, and trying to distract himself into forgetting. He seems like a self centered player but it is a facade for a young man crippled with anxiety, fears, and sadness.Their paths cross and their interactions are inconsistent and confusing, but on some deeper level they recognize the other's inner turmoil. They are two people dealing with demons and hidden pain that find themselves in need of each other. People don't understand their connection and many don't like it. But Wes and Maggie have the ability to understand and soothe each other in a way no one realizes. They both have challenges, fears, insecurities and pain to face, but they provide each other with support and comfort. They are young and inexperienced with true feelings and relationships. They are learning to love, and live and laugh again. But they also have to learn give and take and to find a healthy balance. This is a story about their personal growth, exploring their connection, and hope, and healing. It is a sweet, emotional, engaging story told in both Wes and Maggie's points of view. The characters have problems and depth. The side characters have interesting personalities and stories developing. It feels like the tv series Friday Night Lights and has a lot of the typical High School types with jocks, cheerleaders, nerds, and mean girls. I will admit that I had a bit of a hard time connecting with the characters at first, especially Wes and his behavior in the beginning of the story. But I had to step back and think this is supposed to be about a high school boy and they do not always think straight or always make the best decisions. Sometimes they are just clueless and don't think about repercussions or how others see the situation. But I did warm up to him and felt for him. I liked Maggie with her sweet, giving nature, but sometimes I got a bit frustrated with her as well. But I did become engaged and more immersed in the story as we got to know them more and it got more emotional .This will be a series with the next book being about Maggie's cousin/Wes' best friend Brady. I really came to like him and am interested in his story but there are also some other stories brewing. I really liked Gunner, Nash, and Ryker too. I enjoyed their relationships with the parental figures. This is a YA series that my teen could read (even though it does talk about drinking and has references to sex), but I enjoyed as well.
I really dislike that fact that I'm a HUGE Abbi Glines fan because it really makes my love for this book seem biased. Until Friday Night was amazing! Maggie and West's story is right up there with Blair and Rush's series for me. If I could say that Fallen Too Far wasn't my favorite Abbie Glines book, then Until Friday Night would be.The story was gut wrenching and heart warming at the same time. Maggie and West's story I think was one that brings to light the horrible life experiences that young people face.I'm not going to go into great details about the story because honestly, the summery does a fantastic job of that. What I am going to close this review is saying that The Field Party series has started off phenomenally. The stage has been set and I can't wait to read all about Brady, Nash, Gunner, Ryker and Asa in future books. If it just so happens that Raleigh and Serena get dropped on their heads during a cheer, well, then I just might celebrate. ;) (hint, hint)It's going to be a torturous wait but I'm more than confident that it will be one worth waiting for.
