Sarah Conover's collection of traditional Buddhist tales leads us to the kind of implicit understanding of ourselves and others that only stories can provide. Following the Buddha through his various transformations, these clarified, often humorous narrative journeys open the ancient masters profound and gentle teachings to persons of all ages, religions, races, and ideological persuasions. Over and over this marvelous book tells us, "let go of your anger, your fear, your greedy desire. Embrace gladness. Follow the path." And the stories themselves, simply as stories, from a wondrous pageant: of elephants, monkeys, monks, and men working through foolishness toward wisdom and delight.

This is a beautiful collection of historical Buddhist teaching fables and anecdotes. They are pulled from various sources, including the Jataka tales - a collection of Buddhist stories said to be based on the Buddha's past lives as various creatures and beings. Other stories read more like Zen teaching tales. Some of the tales have a clear ethical teaching, while others are more esoteric or koan-like.The illustrations by Valerie Wahl are spread throughout the book, and are done in a lovely Chinese/Japanese tapestry kind of style (to my eye anyway.) There are 32 stories in all, most 2-3 pages, some more, all meant to be read aloud. In between the stories are sayings from the Buddha or Buddhist teachers. Aesthetically, this is a lovely book.I do think this book is probably best suited for ages 7-12 or so, rather than the 'Young Adult' (teen) designation currently listed for this edition. Most teens will probably find the pictures and format too 'babyish.' On the other hand, children under 7 (and even some with older) may find the themes too esoteric to follow. Many do require some understanding of Buddhist themes, and for that reason, I think this book is probably best suited for Buddhist families, or at least children with parents somewhat familiar with Buddhism already. The confusion on age and sophisticated themes of some of the tales is my only reason for giving this 4 instead of 5 stars.(Some books to consider for younger children or families new to Buddhism are
