After some research to locate information on one of the biggest Salmon canning operations in the country if not the "world" I located this small booklet on Pacific American Fisheries in Bellingham, WA. You would never know this huge facility existed if you visit the city of Bellingham today. It is incredible how such a large operation involving manufacturing, shipbuilding, can factories, box factories and of course docks and Canning operations left only a small pile of tin along the walkway across the water at the old Taylor street docks. This little gem of a book is chock full of many years of research and gathering of information on the operation and management of this pioneering enterprise, which of course today could not exist due to environmental concerns, thus its' demise in 1969. This story is similar to the Alaska Packers (APA) operations. The current day Icicle Seafoods operations continue to present day, albeit, scaled down, very much controlled enviornmentally and with numerous regulations. This book gives a really good picture of a bygone era where abundant natural resources provided an incredible amount of employment, utilized many resources of the day and of course made a ton of money for the Canners and Packers who financed this entire operation.Pacific American Fisheries employed hundreds, built ships for wartime service, provided millions of cases of canned salmon during the early 1900's. However, after the WWII, regulations on fishing brought a screaming halt to many of the operations with canneries being sold off over the years and the entire operation being discontinued. The book is a great history lesson and should be of interest to those interested in pioneering enterprises in the Northwest in the early 1900's.
