DeGraaf is the godfather of forest wildlife habitat management in New England, and every practicing forester, wildlife biologist, and ecologist must have his complete works on their bookshelf. As a wilderness ecologist who does not prescribe habitat management in interior forests, I still find his management prescriptions most useful as they parallel natural gap-phase dynamics found in wildlands. In practice, it is most important that you study what you have in your target landscape before you commission the chainsaws ... you will most often find that your target forest species are already there. That said, again, the depth and breadth of knowledge that DeGraaf et al. bring to the table is without parallel. Buy a copy for the foresters in your region. We all owe him.
This book is written by 4 extremely knowledgeable foresters and wildife biologists from the New England region. It outlines the habitat needs of different species of wildlife, which consists of the broad catergories of birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. It then shows different forest management scenarios (silviculture) for woodland owners to follow to provide this habitat. The more forested three northern New England states (Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont) are treated as a unit, and the somewhat more open (less forested) three southern New England states, (Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island) are treated as another. By using either uneven aged forest management, even aged management, or no management options, the authors show the resulting species of wildlife which can occur as a result of harvesting a variety of forest products from the land. Good forest managment can be the driving force for enhancing and maintaining wildlife populations. The book has many excellent color photos and computer generated forest landscape simulations throughout; this helps the reader to visualize the landscape when subjected to certain management scenarios. It ends with a variety of self help/land management checklists, allowing managers and landowners to apply these principles to their woodlands. The book also has applicability in much of the eastern part of the country outside of the New England states. A reader and landowner cannot go wrong with this excellent book. When one satiates his or her curiosity with this book, they can go on and read its bigger sibling, "A Technical Guide to Forest Wildlife Habitat Management in New England", an even weightier and more comprehensive tome aimed at professionals, and written in the same fine fashion by the same authors.
This is a great informational and recommendation giving guide to any aspiring environmentalist! It is a bit biased in some aspects of what should be done in some situations but I'll leave that up to you to decide! Overall pretty good read!
I totally didn't get it. Sort of a bad college course.
