This is a good choice for an AP level environmental science course. The material is laid out in a logical way, beginning with the necessary background on biology and ecology, then using chapters on environmental ethics and policy as a segue into some of the more human-centered topics such as energy and pollution. A good review section is at the end of each chapter with comprehension and analytical level questions for students to answer. Some chapters also have opportunities for finding relationships within presented data. There were a few moments in this textbook that gave me pause. In the chapter on ecosystems, I was puzzled by the use of climatographs with two line graphs instead of the more typical line graph for temperature and bar graph for precipitation. The graphs were much more difficult to quickly analyze in this format.I also caught a whiff of author bias. In the nuclear energy section, the author seems to have a clearly positive view of the use and growth of nuclear energy as a alternative fuel. I suspect this reflects a greater concern for the chronic issue of carbon dioxide pollution as opposed to the more acute risk of a nuclear accident. One can easily argue for this position. However, this comes off as more than a little tone-deaf, given the Fukushima accident in Japan. There were also a few topics missing that I look for, such as the growing field of hydraulic fracturing to extract natural gas. However, all things considered, this is a comprehensive book that covers a wide range of topics with an appropriate amount of detail.
This book is good in that it provides a nice background to environmental science and gives lots of good examples with review questions at the end of the chapters. I do like the book, but it's a little elementary for graduate school (and is not the only book for my class, so maybe it's meant to be simple). I'm assuming this book is meant more for high schoolers.
I used this book in my Environmental Science class. For a textbook this was very interesting to read and I would say it is one of the textbooks I actually looked forward to reading. I learned so much from this. I like study guides and always buy them for my textbooks. After many searches for a study guide, I found Outlines & Highlights for Environment: The Science Behind the Stories by Jay H. Withgott and Scott R. Brennan. It was helpful for taking notes since my professor basically taught straight from the textbook. But overall for a college textbook, this is definitely interesting.
The Environment, it is all around us, part of us and we are part of it. Here we learn of the stories that go along with all that is going on in our world, pollution, destruction, global warming, or better phrased as climate change.Water, we drink it, bath in it, without it we couldn't survive, but do you know what's in it?Our food from the source to finish, but there is a part of it we know so little about.A text book for sure, but it is also a good read for those who want to know more about our environment and what we and they can do to change, protect and use it wisely.Highly recommend this for anyone interested in the world we live in.
I needed this book for a college course and found it a lot cheaper on here than anywhere else. Didn't expect it to come in a binder, but that was an oversight on my part. Whatever gets the job done though, so I am very pleased to have this book before my classes start so I can skim over the book a bit. Overall, I am happy with the purchase. :)
This text book is organized very well. The topics have a fluent transition between subjects and explain the subject on a level that is comprehendible. Real life/world experiences are provided to show application of material. This text is a great reference.
Super slow shipping. I had to rent the boom from local bookstore because it took so long. I spend way more money than I intended to on the book and STILL had to pay more. The book was also covered in labels and stickers from previous owners that could have been removed as a courtesy, but no courtesy here!
This is a well rounded book. It takes you from the basics of science to what Environmental Science is and the issues our world faces today. The graphics are great and enhance the text. There are stories in each chapter that drive a point home, giving it a real world application.
