This is an excellent field reference guide for anyone working in the fields of fish culture, fish biology, or hatchery/fishery/forestry technicians for whom accurate identification of juvenile salmonids is vital. I ordered it for my brother who will be enrolling in a fisheries program this coming Fall term.I have no investment in or exposure to juvenile salmonids personally, however I have an insatiable curiosity for nature, and learned a great deal from this well organized, easy to understand booklet. Without doubt, it would enable me to accurately identify the 10 species of juvenile salmon, trout, and char. (Exactly how I'd manage to capture the slippery little buggers and hold them long enough to identify, could likely fill the pages of a humorous, coffee table pictorial! LOL ; p)I deducted one star for three reasons, each having to do with form and presentation of this work:1. The type face is an extremely small font size (perhaps 6 or 7 point?) in what appears to be a Times New Roman font style, and is NOT EASY TO SEE. I have excellent, unaided, visual acuity and really had a rough time seeing the text.2. Originally written, illustrated, photographed, and compiled by Canadians, for Weyerhaeuser Ltd. and the Canadian Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and published in British Columbia,the guide is written using *Canadian English spelling, which, while *colourful, could be confusing for some readers in the U.S. Since the guide is often used as a textbook for U.S. students of fisheries sciences, it would be nice if there was at least one edition published using American English spelling, specifically for shipment to U.S. distributors.3. This guide might more aptly serve as a field reference for students and technicians if it were redesigned.
