I bought this book recently and I love it. I think this would be a great supplement to a General Biology course, but is too detailed for regular use in a high school biology course, with the exception of AP. I think it is a little too detailed for a high school bio class, although it covers everything that I was introduced to in my Bio 110 course.A slight caution--many people may see the title and bright cover thinking this would be a 'fun' way to learn or a great 'fun' gift to someone interested in science. In reality, it's set up like a textbook. It's meant to be a serious aide to someone learning biology. In that sense, it's a great tool, but this isn't like the coloring books we used as kids! So don't be misled.For those of you looking for a supplement to a high school class, perhaps the "Biology Coloring WORKBOOK" would be a better choice.
Hi, I use this book to introduce biology to my kids (9 and 11 yrs) one afternoon a week. I make three copies of the plates, we spend time together colouring, while I read and ask questions regarding the information. The kids discuss and contemplate, ask questions, make faces.. Then we take our coloured copies and paste them onto coloured cardstock. It makes for great lapbooks. I don't care if it's highschool or collegiate level. It's just meant as an introduction and a way to spend time together. I give it 4 stars for the colouring book idea, well written and thoughtful paraphrasing, plus 1 star for me and all those visual thinkers that learn from this type of educational material.
I ordered this coloring book knowing that it was geared toward students more advanced than mine. Although I'm a certified high school biology teacher, I choose to teach 6th and 7th grade middle school students. For middle school students, I believe that atleast 1/4th of this book can be used - which is good considering it has 111 coloring pages (plates). For a high school biology teacher, I believe that 3/4ths or more of this book can be utilized. Still, for the price I paid for it, as being "like new", I feel the pages that I can use with middle school students is a bargain.
I teach high school biology and physical science . My students in general are probably on anywhere between a 4th-to on grade level learning. All of my students do much better with hands on activities so I thought coloring would be great. The book is defiantly for older students however-it helps raise the bar for my students in a less threatening way. With that said let me describe the book:On one page you get a lesson-as you read it it tell you to stop and color a part of the picture and then you continue to read-and then stop and color. That's awesome. Very paced and structured . In addition it's not just biology-it has covers everything from matter to covalent bonds -but covers way more biology. All in all a great buy.
I understand why the other reviewer was disappointed with this book- it is not geared for people with graduate educations. Rather, it could be a very useful study aid for a late high-school or early undergraduate level student. It has to cover a lot of basic science concepts very quickly and so doesn't get into great detail. But it covers basic concepts thoroughly. The pictures are detailed and fun to color- I suggest using fine-tip magic markers.
My high school biology student and I were ready to color but this is more a textbook than a coloring book. The picture on the outside of the book looks much more defined than the pictures in the book. There was a LOT of coloring in letters and numbers, and you need a VERY fine line marker to do it. You're supposed to read the text page on the left to discover how to color the picture on the right. We expected better pictures - like the one on the front of the book, and less text to wade through. Wish I'd gotten the Gray's Anatomy coloring book instead.
I liked coloring in, the important structures in biology. It helped me to remember the concepts better. I also used Patrick Leonardi's "The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations" Volume 1, Volume 2, Volume 3. These study guides were great for test preparation because these were the similar questions asked on my college biology exams. I also found the biology coloring book to have great sections on DNA, Genetics, Ecology, Biology of Plants, Biology of Animals, Human Biology, Reproduction and Development. This is an excellent visual. This four books are extremely helpful for college biology.
I bought this book to suppliment the materials I present in my freshman HS Biology class. I already use the Botany and Zoology books in my Botany/Zoology course. The quality of the books is excellent. Specifically, the slides on Meiosis did a good job tracking each individual chromatid into its respective gamete. Perhaps the most useful is the slide that is depicted on the cover - the animal cell. Looking online for a decent animal cell depiction turns up some pretty sorry examples, far inferior to those found in this book. In addition to excellent drawings, the explanations that accompany each are very good.I highly recomend this book to anyone studying or teaching Biology at any level.
