Subaru Natsuki was just trying to get to the convenience store but wound up summoned to another world. He encounters the usual things--life-threatening situations, silver haired beauties, cat fairies--you know, normal stuff. All that would be bad enough, but he's also gained the most inconvenient magical ability of all--time travel, but he's got to die to use it. How do you repay someone who saved your life when all you can do is die?

Re:ZERO is a Fantasy/Mystery novel, with light-heartened humor and love separated by violence and tragedy. It is one of the best and most original stories I've ever read. Far too often I feel stories are adhering to predictable stories and characters, almost as if they are written to be shallow and easy to digest at the cost of anything truly memorable.Re:ZERO is a brilliantly unpredictable. Each character is memorable and unique. The depth of their personalities, emotions, how they think, who they are, and their own histories are so meticulously crafted that even minor characters become unforgettable. The complexity of the characters is matched by the plot itself, leading the reader into a false sense of security, or tricking them into believing they can predict outcomes of encounters. For each mystery solved in Re:ZERO, two more often take its place. This builds suspense that engrosses and carries the reader forward from each chapter to the next.Don't let the art fool you. This is a complicated, violent, mystery fantasy novel. Yes, it was written in Japan, and yes the cover art is unlike most novels sold in in English speaking countries, but don't let what's unfamiliar to you stop you from giving this novel a chance. Treat this book as you would any famous American made series.Don't judge the outside of this book or its origins until you've given it a chance. You won't regret it.One last thing. As I said above, this novel is humorous, loving, and funny, but it is also very violent, and as the summary says, 'How do you repay someone who saves your life if all you can do is die,' be prepared for many cruel, heartbreaking moments in this story. The depth of characters makes the tragedies that much more meaningful, but you'll be happy you got to know them, even though they're only words in a book.

I'm both a huge fan of this series and a lifelong reader. I was excited for this novel, which promised another opportunity to enter the world of Re:Zero and experience a different, more detailed angle.Re:Zero is definitely one of the more worthwhile stories to come out in recent years. It's dark and complex (though you only get relatively small taste of those elements in this volume) and extremely well-paced. It receives full marks for the beauty and intensity of its characters and plot. It's a five-star story. However, I would give Yen Press's adaptation in particular two and a half stars, if I could. It's just serviceable, and sometimes not even that. I also read the Spice and Wolf light novels years ago, and I was hoping that Yen's ability to adapt and translate would have improved since then. Unfortunately, this seems not to be the case. The adaptation of Spice and Wolf was stilted and uninspired. The translation was adequate but dull; it felt like a very literal transliteration of the Japanese text as opposed to an adaptation for the ease and enjoyment of reading for native English speakers. Probably the best example of this is in the dialogue, for it is at times difficult to tell which character is speaking in a conversation due to a lack of cues. I imagine this isn't a problem in the original Japanese because of nuances in diction and dialect that can't be retained in translation.Unfortunately, this volume of Re:Zero has all of these problems, except even worse, and more. The translation feels even more literal and awkward, I'm definitely confused more often about who is speaking in dialogue, and now, to compound the issue, there are plenty of grammatical, usage, and syntax errors. It feels very much like what I might expect from a relatively decent fan translation, but not something I would expect to pay for.I'm happy to have supported the franchise, and enjoyed the book for the second look I got at the story. I might even buy the second light novel once it comes out, but now that I've seen the quality of Yen Press's translation, that has gone from a resounding certainty to a troubled maybe.

Having watched the anime and read the manga, I was excited to finally read the source material first hand. I think the translation did a pretty good job of conveying the original intent of the author. I did notice a couple minor errors such as a missing word and one sentence that could have been written better, but all in all I think the translation was a quality one. The story itself I found engrossing and entertaining. I am definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the series as soon as it comes out.

As an English only speaking fan of the anime and can't get enough of Re:Zero this LN does not disappoint! Looking forward to the English release of the next volume!

Im loving the anime, so I decided to give this a chance! This is the first LN I've ever bought (or any reading material at all tbh) and I wasnt disappointed. It didnt come in perfect condition though, but it's not a big deal to me. Added a photo of it.

Re: Zero is a fun story. It manages to embrace the anime fantasy genre while remaining very self-aware and even a little spoofy. It makes no attempt to hide the inspiration it received from anime such as Magic Knight Rayearth, Escaflowne, and Now and Then, Here and There. If you're looking for a fantasy story that pokes fun at its forebearers while still remaining serious, Re: Zero is for you. It was even popular enough to receive anime and manga adaptations. However, it does have an annoying flaw with its dialogue. It often doesn't tell you who's speaking, leaving you to figure it out for yourself. There were numerous times I found myself saying, "Wait, who said that? Was it Subaru? Oh, no, it was Satella."But aside from that, I have no trouble recommending Re: Zero.

I absolutely love this series!! Since the anime debut, Re Zero has quickly become one of my favorite series this year. I just had to order the novel after finding out it would be localized. I can't wait for more to come in the future.
