Something went wrong for me with this book. I loved the first two books, but about 200 pages into this one I started feeling weary. I skimmed a lot and what I found just made me feel wearier. I thought the length of this book would indicate a lot of important happenings, but it just made enough time for me to grow resentful of Lia and dislike the way the ending was cropped together because while it's toted as a "happy ending" there's no way it could ever actually work if you know anything about relationships and affection. We still see some great writing, it's complex and highly detailed and well thought out, and the world building and politics are masterfully crafted, but we lost a lot of what Lia was in the last two books. She doesn't really seem to care much about Rafe in this book and her mentality shifts to following duty and the prophecies in the songs of Venda. I mean I get it, she's the Chosen One who is going to save all these people and that sort of stuff, but if Lia was going to do something for Venda she would have been better off never escaping with Rafe I feel. It's like the escape and all the problems clashing with Rafe over their conflicting responsibilities and desires was just excessive and unnecessary tension added in to thicken the book and plump it up. I mean, Rafe gets betrothed but at that point Lia is already set on helping other people and kingdoms and not being his queen/wife so I don't quite understand what the point of all this was. You'd think a couple who endured so much to be together wouldn't allow politics to get between them yet here we are with that unfortunate trope, you know, the one that goes "as soon as the pair everyone was hoping to get together got together intense things happen in plot to test and/or ruin that relationship.

Usually I do this in paragraphs but I am too infuriated and frustrated by this book write now. This section is my "What I Liked" section, otherwise known as the reasons-why-I'm-not-giving-this-book-zero-stars, in this case.- Technically, the ending IS a HEA. You'll see below my full thoughts on the ending. But technically, technically, we have a HEA. Lia, Rafe, Kaden, Pauline, and other major characters get a happy ending. I liked Rafe's ending, though I wished for more for him.- The love triangle is gone - ish? It is. But then, the romance is pretty much gone in general, so there's that. More on that below. What I Did Not Like:- Lia is a complete and utter b***h in this book. Honestly, I don't know how I liked her in the previous two books. She certainly wasn't this bad in those books, I can tell you that. Lia turns into this raging crazy person.

Let’s take a moment, shall we? I’d like to mark this occasion. I wish I had banners to unfurl and a red carpet to roll out. At the very least, I could really use some confetti. Why all the fanfare and excitement? First and foremost, it’s because “The Beauty of Darkness” in finally out in the world but for me it means so much more, because I loved this book so damn much. I make no exaggerations when I say that this final book in The Remnant Chronicles series is absolute perfection and is now one of my all-time favorite books. The perfection of “The Beauty of Darkness” lies in the way that Pearson managed to interweave all the elements we love about the first two books into this climactic finale. All of the mystery, politics, danger, romance and legend are still there, but taken to the next level. It’s a true final book in the sense that the highs are so high and the lows are so low. Everything is on the line and as a reader, I was totally along for the ride. This was by far the most emotional of the three books for me. I cried in several places and was fearful until the very end over how it was all going to play out.Yes, there were developments that frustrated me…but in a good way. I wanted MORE for these characters! I didn’t want them to become victims to the circumstances that surrounded them. But you know what, when an entire realm is under the threat of an insanely evil man bent on utter destruction, people are forced to make tough decisions that they don’t want to make. They are forced to act out of character, whether it be for self-preservation, defending a belief or protecting the ones they love.Yes, Lia, Rafe, Kaden and Pauline are changed people in this book.
