SPE TEXTBOOK SERIES VOL 2, Applied Drilling Engineering is the most popular drilling textbook. Yes, it’s outdated (1986). Nevertheless, it still holds market dominance. Why? It's crisp, concise, and proven, albeit a bit limited. Contents:Rotary drillingDrilling fluidsCementsDrilling hydraulicsRotary drilling bitsFormation pore pressure and fracture resistanceCasing designDirectional drilling and deviation controlPositives:1) Compact yet dense. It’s hard to express how much detail this book has within 500 pages. Yet it's still easy to lug around, even in the field.2) Fine balance between staying concise yet not leaving out much. This is a real achievement. Drilling is complex; mechanics, stress, power, fluids, geology, chemistry, and economics are all involved. Drilling textbooks must always decide what it is is going to to cover…and what it will leave out. This book masters the basics and goes no further.Yet this book is not perfect:a) Some subjects are missing due to the age of the book. What was exotic in 1986 is routine today: coil tubing drilling, under-balanced drilling, and extensive offshore drilling information all belong in this book, yet are conspicuously absent.b) Considering taking the Petroleum PE Exam? If you know this book well, you should get almost a fourth of the PE exam problems correct. Being concise, it's speedy (yet technical) reference (especially when properly tabbed and highlighted). However, it’s missing a few important areas that SPE Vol 12 has added, so I would recommend getting Vol 12 for the exam.c) For a book so old, one would expect the bugs to be fully worked out. Yet problems remain. Examples: Problem 2.
