Netiquette: A Student's Guide To Digital Etiquette (Digital & Information Literacy (Paper))
Download Free (EPUB, PDF)

While digital and computer technology have advanced by leaps and bounds in the past twenty years, allowing individuals to conduct a wide array of personal, educational, and professional activities on personal computers and hand-held devices, the social rules for computer and Internet use have not yet caught up to the technology. Issues of basic civility and digital etiquette, or "netiquette," increasingly arise, with no clear guidelines in place to help people police their own behavior when online and monitor the activities of others in the "digital community." This book provides solid guidelines for young computer users to follow to help them avoid giving or receiving offense and even more serious forms of online trouble. Covering everything from the proper use of library computer terminals and wi-fi cafes to digital plagiarism, this book instructs readers in how to promote civil online behavior, alert the appropriate authorities to inappropriate or harassing behavior, and create a safe, welcoming, and polite cyber-community.

I purchased this book for use in a class on teaching social skills. I am currently creating my Digital Citizenship unit and thought this book would be helpful. This book is a very slim volume, which in itself, is not a problem. I have many books on specialized topics that are slim but make up for it with quality content. This book is not one of them. At 48 pages, I estimate that about 1/3 is used for full colour photographs - many of which are of people using computers.I understand this book is targeted at younger audiences but the first two pages of the Out in Public chapter (1) about using computers in public talks about time limits, seeking permission, and needing to log in. I have seen students as young as grade two accomplish these tasks at school and in public libraries. The chapter does not include information on password safety, key loggers, shoulder surfing for personal data, exposure to viruses or trojans. I have learned, however, not to use wi-fi without permission and to respect time limits. The only piece of real safety information in chapter 1 is not to give out credit card numbers or social insurance numbers - this is good advice.I regret purchasing this book, especially since I paid for rapid shipping as I wanted it for my classroom. I am not going to return it as I hope to find some use or salvage for the material. My advice is that this books is suitable for someone who has never had access to a computer (in school or in private). For the rest of us, there are better resources online.
