My father wrote this book when I was very young and it is just gratifing to know that other people enjoyed it as much as I did growing up. A friend of mine saw a copy in my house and then told me that it was her favortie book as a child. Its nice to know that people love this book. We appreaciate your comments very much. Thank you, Celia Gorman.
Long long ago, I was a wee little one wandering through a book store at the mall. And then I saw a large box. In that large box was a stuffed baby dinosaur and a book. Yes dad, I will read the book. And I did.I don't know where the book is now. I know I read it a lot. The familiar cover is burned into my mind, and looks exactly as I remember. But I do still have my little stuffed Maia. Maia survived a bug bombing during a flea infestation and two very long house movings. When I ran into this book listing, I had to dig deep into my mountain of industrial-size tupperware storage containers. There she was, little red bean dot and all.I can't find any images or even a mention of the stuffed Maia on the Internet. I uploaded one here.
The book was in excellent condition. The dust jacket had a few minor wear tears that were easily fixed with clear packing tape. I bought this book for a friends young son. He loves dinosaurs as did my now 19-year-old. This was one of my son's favorite books as a child so I wanted to share it with my friend's son. He loves it as well. Written by a paleontologist, it details the factual account of a maiasaurus' life as put together from the fossil finds in Montana. Excellent writing and beautiful illustrations!
My almost 6 year-old daughter loved Maia and when her teacher read it in school during "Dinosaur Week," she came home asking if we could buy it. It is out of print but available from the Museum of the Rockies by calling 406-994-2252. We were thrilled to get it. It is the story of Maia, the Maiasaur,of her growing up and learning about the world outside the nest. The story tells of the wonder and fright as she discovers she must make it on her own, that she must become independent. It is the story of Maia becoming a mother herself and knowing that while she must nurture her baby dinosaurs, she must also move them toward independence so that they can survive on their own. The illustrations are fabulous and the story teaches children about dinosaurs and about growing up in a caring and thoughtful manner. Beautifully written and illustrated.

Lots of kids are in to dinosaurs these days. But mostdinosaur books are encyclopedic. BOOooring to youngchildren. And this book attempts to communicate a new scientific discovery; some dinosaurs travelled in herds and cared for their young. The seeds of a dust-collector. But _Maia_ is not a typical book. Here, Horner and Gorman use a fictional account of a mother dinosaur and her young to communicate the science through the guise of a wonderful, heart-warming story. You and your kids will come to love the characters in this story; feel their love and their fears. And in the meantime, you'll learn some cutting-edge science! Such a deal... buy it. 56 pages
