I Just Hope It's Lethal: Poems Of Sadness, Madness, And Joy
Download Free (EPUB, PDF)

The teenage years are a time filled with sadness, madness, joy, and all the messy stuff in between. Sometimes it feels that every day brings a new struggle, a new concern, a new reason to stay in bed with the shades drawn. But between moments of despair and confusion often come times of great clarity and insight, when you might think, like the poet Rumi, “Whoever’s calm and sensible is insane!” It is moments like these that have inspired the touching, honest, and gripping poems found in I Just Hope It’s Lethal: Poems of Sadness, Madness, and Joy. After all, what’s normal anyway? This collection includes poems by Charles Bukowski, Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, T. S. Eliot, Edgar Allen Poe, W. B. Yeats, Dorothy Parker, Jane Kenyon, and many more, including teenage writers and up-and-coming poets.

I picked this up on a whim, without even reading the back, and so was not expecting much--only to be completely blown away. Most poetry anthologies I read contain just a slim number of poems I like, but I enjoyed the majority of the works in this book. Most of them deal with emotions and mental illness; some were humorous, some were serious, and a few made me actually stop breathing from their sheer brilliance. There is a good mix of traditional and modern pieces. I also like how it exposes not only well-known poets, but lesser-known ones as well, because I enjoy discovering fresh voices. I've reread it a few times now, and it hasn't lost its spark yet, and I doubt it will for a long, long time, if ever. Oh, and this is targeted at teens, but the older crowd will glean just as much from it as adolescents do.

This anthology is great - the selections are well-chosen, and I hope they will speak to our high school students in a powerful way.

Poems of sadness, madness and joy about says it all. There's something here for every mood. I share these with my teenage students and it makes them poetry believers. Wish there had been a book like this around when I was a gloomy young gus. Old favorites and new ones, and a killer price--- I can afford to buy two at a time!

What a great book whether you are full of madness sadness OR joy! Some of my favorite poets are here but I love the ones that are new to me, too.

Not so great

This book ROCKS!!!
