The Opies collect folk/play songs from schoolyards. The clapping and jump-rope songs are researched and some go back to the 1700's and are still sung today, although with changes over time. This is a superb collection and, as usual, the Opies have provided us with invaluable insight into every child's garden of verses.
My children and I still love many of the poems across the history of English poetry, which are contained in this book. Starting when they were 2 or 3, I read these to them so much that they could finish the lines wherever I stopped. This book is a treasure; I buy copies whenever I can for new mothers, and mark our old favorites. My kids now read them to my grandkids. For bedtime when the lights are low, no more picture books are needed, this poetry soothes, entertains, and teaches them rhythm, onomatopoeia, memorization, imagination, culture, wit, and affection for the English word.
My kids and I love these poems. We read one together each day, and then my kids draw a picture of what the poem means to them. This book is wonderful for vocabulary development. The kids get exposure to an extremely wide variety of authors, which I believe is far beyond what they would be exposed to in most elementary schools (either public or private). There is so much variety in the poetry selections. No matter what your child's interests, this book has something for everyone. This is a fantastic book: great for home schooling families or for anyone who wants to enrich their child's education. These poems are all available free online, but most kids will prefer the format of the book.
This book has so much for children with so many wonderful authors, some i've never heard about.Favourite poems are included and guaranteed to keep your kids happy on a rainy day or an incentive if reluctant to go to bed.Don't forget to read Jim and Matilda by hilaire Belloc. Kipling, Milne, Lear, they are all there.
Every child should be so blessed as to read this book or have it read to them. A very lovely collection of poems!
This book has a large selection of wonderful poems. Some are funny, some are touching, and all of them were enjoyable to my children.
