This young writer has artfully collected a number of life stories, fiction and poetry into a book well worth reading. I truly enjoyed the personal anecdotes, and believe her stories of navigating crew team trials and tribulations can be appreciated by anyone who has taken up the sport. Her story "On the Art of Moving Mountains" speaks to "will" and how people are tested every day to do their best. Anyone who has gone through a variety of moves can appreciate her vignette on "Home." Finally, she has a fantastic description of her relationship with a grandfather she never knew in life, but who guides her from the afterlife. Well worth a read!
This engaging volume will delight the reader with its depth of thought and insight into the life challenges faced by anyone coming of age. This is no travelogue nor bland personal history narrative. The collection of short essays, poems and fiction (including a script) delves into the inner thoughts and feelings of the author as she transitions toward adulthood within the context of a Navy family's evolving challenges. But the takeaways are universal and transcend that context. Using the sport of crew as her metaphor, the author describes life journeys to which all can relate because they reflect universal personal joys, sorrows, and family dynamics. Clear writing and cogent expression of feeling and thought make it a joy to read. For anyone concerned about the "dumbing down" of American youth, this book is a welcome counterpoint by a talented writer with an impressive intellect.
