The Second Edition of Freshwater Ecology is broad, up-to-date treatment of everything from the basic chemical and physical properties of water to advanced unifying concepts of the community ecology and ecosystem relationships as found in continental waters. With 40% new and expanded coverage, this text covers applied and basic aspects of limnology, now with more emphasis on wetlands and reservoirs than in the previous edition. The authors take a synthetic approach to ecological problems, teaching students how to handle the challenges faced by contemporary aquatic scientists. New to this edition: 80 new and updated figures, including a section of color plates 2 new chapters and expanded coverage throughout 500 new and updated references Expanded revision of Dodds' successful text.New boxed sections provide more advanced material within the introductory, modular format of the first edition.Basic scientific concepts and environmental applications featured throughout.Added coverage of climate change, ecosystem function, hypertrophic habitats and secondary production.Expanded coverage of physical limnology, groundwater and wetland habitats. Expanded coverage of the toxic effects of pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupters as freshwater pollutantsMore on aquatic invertebrates, with more images and pictures of a broader range of organismsExpanded coverage of the functional roles of filterer feeding, scraping, and shredding organisms, and a new section on omnivores.Expanded appendix on standard statistical techniques.Supporting website with figures and tables - http://www.elsevierdirect.com/companion.jsp?ISBN=9780123747242

I've been teaching aquatic biology and limnology at the University level for more than 20 years. Until now I used "Limnology" by Robert Wetzel as my textbook. The 3rd edition of Limnology came out in 2001, and in 2005 Bob Wetzel passed away. I continued using his book for the next 10 years, but it was going progressively out of date. When I checked with the publisher I was informed that at least at that time there was no plan for anyone to take over the title and update it. So...I started looking around for other options.About a year ago I came across "Freshwater Ecology" by Dodds and Whiles, and gave it a look. It was published in 2010, nearly a decade newer than the last edition of Limnology. I decided to adopt it for my senior level course in Limnology. I just finished using it for that class for the first time. This is a small enrollment class of usually around a dozen students. Most students who take this class are eyeing careers in fisheries management or ecology. We use the textbook extensively in class. At least half of each class meeting is devoted to open discussion of the assigned reading for the day. By the end of the semester students and I had read the entire textbook. Readings for this class were pretty heavy going when I used Limnology by Wetzel. But this semester, when I asked my students how they liked "Freshwater Ecology" they reported that they found it to be readable and understandable...not something my students used to say about "Limnology."I too found this textbook informative and readable. I also read the whole thing this semester with my students. As textbooks in specialized areas go, this one is excellent. Don't get me wrong, it's its own book, it's not just a Wetzel reboot. I like the layout, the presentation, and the content.I plan to use this textbook for the foreseeable future.5 stars.

For the most part, I really enjoyed using this book for class. The content discussing abiotic factors can be really confusing and seems to repeat itself (a lot); however, content discussing biotic factors of ecology was very well presented and really interesting to read.

There are many Midwestern examples in this book (talks about Ogallala aquifer, Missouri river, etc.). It's dense with information and sometimes difficult to construct a clear idea of what a term is based on context clues, but it does have a glossary to help with that. Even though it is dense with information, it's not written as such a high level that someone who's taken ecology to understand.

Great introductory text! Well written and accessible to a variety of students and scientists. It's a text that I like to page through for the literature, and often will lend to others looking for a freshwater perspective. Good to have on hand if you're just starting out in a freshwater discipline.

This text does a great job of covering a lot of material in an approachable way. The writing is well paced rather than dry, making it easy to absorb the content without it becoming a chore.

Looks great, perfect condition and came right on time. I wish the book had more colored pictures though. Everything is in black and white.

Good book quality and great price and timely shipping.

Poorly bound. It fell apart after a few weeks of use.
