Loons' inherent shyness keeps them from becoming bird celebrities like rascally ravens, noisy crows or any number of beloved song birds. Yet, the loon's habit of wintering along New England's sounds and bays brings them into the public eye, especially when they are among the shorebirds victimized by offshore oil spills. Bill Sullivan first observed loons in freshwater during his many years living in New Hampshire. Now, he lives close to Block Island Sound and watches for their winter return from freshwater lakes to the Sound. In 'Loon Lore,' Sullivan's writing and the excellent sepia illustrations by Leslie Tryon present a paean to the loon, but there's more than joyful praise. He takes us through time, juxtaposing a story from the Wabanaki beside his poem 'Exodus;' Thoreau's words about the importance of wild places is juxtaposed against an essay about the effect of oil spills, including the 1996 oil spill in Block Island Sound. Many of us join Sullivan in recognizing the Common Loon's great appeal. With this attractive book, he appeals to the reader to imagine the loon throughout time and myth and to hope we can assure loons and their distinctive voice will keep their place in the world. A thoughtful reading list of online sources and printed material is included.
