While Gordon Russell must clearly treasure his view of Great Meadow, his book reads fairly flat, with little insight, understanding, or detail added to each entry arranged by season. Most entries could be edited to "saw geese, saw otters, saw leaves, saw weather change."Mr. Russell simply does not let you as the reader love what he loves, not for a fault of observation or dedication, but from bland expression.I could see his work fleshed out to be a enjoyable dive into a wild landscape intimately observed if he was to try again.
